Assassin’s Creed Shadows looks like a totally different game on PS5 Pro

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is one of the best-looking games Ubisoft has ever released, but it’s the PS5 Pro that helps make it feel like a totally different game.

There can be no doubt that AC Shadows offers the best visuals we’ve seen from Ubisoft’s stealth series – in fact, one of the biggest positives from our review was just how stunning its environments are. During Naoe and Yasuke’s adventure, you’ll find yourself running along the castle rooftops and strolling through gently swaying bamboo groves.

Shadows’ environments are a real feast for the eyes, even when playing on the base PS5 version. However, the PS5 Pro enhancement helps bring Ubisoft’s latest installment to life and is one that DigitalFoundry believes is the best example of the PS5 Pro’s enhancements we’ve seen to date.

AC Shadows PS5 Pro version is a huge upgrade

In their March 17 video, DigitalFoundry’s Oliver Mackenzie noted that the biggest draws to the PS5 Pro version are in the game’s environmental lighting, which he notes as having a “generational divide” that makes AC Shadows look like “a totally different game” on Sony’s enhanced console.

This is in direct contrast to the base PS5, which has an “overly flat” and muted environmental appearance. “The PS5’s lighting solution fails to capture the subtle occlusion you get from bunches of leafy greenery giving it a dull artificial look,” explained Oliver.

Despite the environments seeing a noticeable improvement on the Pro, DigitalFoundry did find that the overall image quality isn’t vastly different. “Both [versions] suffer from considerable pixel crawl, blocky patterns that emerge on moving edges, and transparencies are poorly upscaled with obvious signs of a low-resolution source.”

Overall, DigitalFoundry revealed that the PS5 Pro enhancements are “pretty enormous” and believes the lighting and improved reflections make the game “possibly the most transformative PS5 Pro upgrade we’ve seen so far.”

So, there you have it, if you’re looking for the best combination of visuals and performance, then you may want to consider investing in a PS5 Pro.
