Battlefield 6 features the series’ signature destruction, where you can blow holes in walls, bring a roof down on top of someone, and drive a tank through an entire building.
But, as you’ll have noticed in the beta, you can destroy a lot, but you can’t destroy everything. Some structures around the map are impervious to damage, and while the devs previously said a completely flattened map wouldn’t be fun to play, they’ve gone into more detail.
In a dev AMA following a gameplay session attended by Dexerto, the devs explained why you can’t destroy ‘main areas’ of maps.
Why you can’t flatten Battlefield 6’s maps
Operation Firestorm returns in Battlefield 6, and we had the chance to try it out ahead of the game’s official launch on October 10. It was brought up that you can’t blast bits out of the smokestacks, and the devs were asked whether the destruction model would get any tweaks or additions.
“Not for launch,” replied design director Shashank Uchil. “We want to make sure we don’t lose important landmarks on the level which helps player orientation.”
Community manager Kevin ‘T0TALfps’ Johnson also replied. “Each map often comes with their own identities and also POI points. These buildings are usually protected from heavy degradation so we can ensure players are able to spot and orientate themselves on the map with ease. Which would be harder to do with significant damage to them!” he explained.

On top of making sure the map is fun to play, they’ve made sure there are still landmarks around the map you can use to orient yourself and know where you are.
Maps producer Claire Bromley also talked about Firestorm specifically. “The Team worked on upgrading the Destruction and explosions across the map,” she explained.
Alongside a button at the bottom of the main chimney that shoots a plume of fire to get rid of snipers camping on top, she said, “all the various Silo’s and gas tanks explode across the map, causing destruction, as well as improved destruction across the level, especially on all the buildings.”
You’ll be able to experience Operation Firestorm and the other maps yourself at the game’s launch, and use the full arsenal of weapons.
