Battlefield 6 fans concerned with map size have nothing to worry about

Battlefield 6 Mirak Valley gameplay

Concern brewed amid the Battlefield 6 Beta as fans grew worried over the number of smaller maps in the rotation. Well, we’ve now played two more maps that happen to be among the biggest in franchise history, so rest assured, you’ve got nothing to worry about.

Following our early preview of Battlefield 6, fans got their hands on the highly anticipated release through the Beta back in August. While hundreds of thousands lined up, even ahead of its launch, breaking records in the process, and community sentiment was mostly positive, there was one sore point.

The mix of maps across the two weekends were on the smaller side, with the likes of Empire State and Iberian Offensive promoting close-quarters combat down narrow streets. Although Liberation Peak and Siege of Cairo were there too, players quickly voiced their frustrations across social media, comparing the direction of Battlefield 6 to Call of Duty.

Answering back without hesitation, EA just gave us another early preview ahead of the game’s October 10 release. We got to explore Mirak Valley and return to Operation Firestorm, all in an effort to reassure the game does indeed feature big maps, and they’re a ton of fun.

Mirak Valley delivers classic Battlefield experience

While it may not quite match the scale of Halvøy, Mirak Valley is set to be among the biggest maps in Battlefield 6 upon release, not including what comes of the inevitable Battle Royale mode.

Jumping into the action, this new preview build had everything unlocked. All weapons, attachments, gadgets, vehicles, and plenty more in-between, as to give us the authentic launch experience.

As I spawned in with a fresh loadout, ready to test the Assault’s ladder, it quickly became clear this map was designed with a classic Battlefield feel top of mind. Running out of the HQ felt utterly bombastic, with a dozen vehicles roaring on the ground and overhead while teammates split up across all manner of objectives.

Vehicles are plentiful – I counted 13 per side – objectives are scattered far and wide, and longer runbacks give you far more time to plan your next move. It’s exactly what you were hoping for.

Battlefield 6 Mirak Valley map
Mirak Valley affords that classic, large-scale Battlefield goodness that you’ve been seeking.

Where on smaller layouts, you’re often dying and respawning at a much faster clip, Mirak Valley allows for a more tactical approach. You can take your time getting to an advantageous position and setting up for a short stay with respawn beacons, defensive measures, and the like.

Alternatively, you can focus your efforts on some of the longest flanking routes known to man, skirting the edges of the map’s boundaries on your way to stealing an objective.

Through it all, chaos can be found at every turn thanks to the litany of vehicles at your fingertips. Unlike, say, Liberation Peak, you don’t have to fight over jets and helicopters quite as much with more to go around here in Mirak Valley.

Operation Firestorm is back in the rotation

Alongside Mirak Valley, Operation Firestorm returns in Battlefield 6, adding to the pool of considerably larger maps. If you prefer, you could avoid the smaller mix altogether and strictly grind in this classic locale.

Swooping overhead in a jet, scaling the seemingly endless ladders, or bursting through the bigger facilities in a tank, all of it feels fantastic here and not just for the hint of nostalgia.

The map works brilliantly with Battlefield 6’s gameplay systems and unique mechanics. It all feels right at home, and much to my surprise, as does the new game mode, Escalation.

Escalation is a real shocker. It feels like a mode that’s always been part of the Battlefield identity. Starting with every objective open at once, as the match progresses, your focus hones in as markers drop off. It all ramps up to a climactic finish, which perfectly hinges around the center of Firestorm with countless explosions popping off all at once. The delightful anarchy only Battlefield can provide.

Operation Firestorm in Battlefield 6
Could Operation Firestorm be the first of many remade maps in BF6? I’d bet the house.

While our preview here was just a small taste of what to expect from some of the bigger maps in Battlefield 6, it’s evident there’s nothing to worry about in this regard.

The game does indeed feature gargantuan layouts, and furthermore, with the post-launch seasonal model, it’s safe to say the lineup will only continue to expand.
