EA confirms Battlefield 6 won’t have console-only crossplay after all

It was said that turning crossplay off on console would still match PlayStation and Xbox players together in Battlefield 6, but EA has now clarified that this isn’t the case.

While crossplay was a huge step forward for gaming, giving players more choice in which platform they choose while still being able to play with their friends, it led to some issues.

Some console players feel those on PC have an unfair advantage thanks to mouse and keyboard and higher frame rates, while cheating is arguably the biggest issue.

It’s much easier to cheat in games on PC, so console players want the option to only play against those on other consoles to almost eliminate the chances of coming up against a cheater.

Following a Battlefield 6 capture event Dexerto attended, EA clarified how the shooter’s crossplay works

There’s no console-only crossplay in Battlefield 6

When a console player turns crossplay on, the matchmaking will prioritize matching them with other console players. But players from all platforms will be in the matchmaking pool, so you might still get some PC players. If you’re on PC, you won’t have the option to disable crossplay.

If you disable crossplay on console, you’ll only be matched with players on your platform (Xbox only if on Xbox, PlayStation only if on PlayStation). You also won’t be able to party up with or join players from other platforms.

This is different from what was said in an interview with IGN on September 12. Ripple Effect’s Matthew Nickerson said, “Console-only crossplay happens if you turn it off. When you flip that switch, then you get, basically, console-only crossplay, and that is, we don’t fill with PC players.”

He confirmed that “PlayStation players can play with Xbox players if crossplay is off,” but we now know this isn’t the case.

Essentially, this means that if you want to play crossplay, there’s always a chance you’ll get a PC player in your lobby, and therefore, increase the chance of encountering a cheater. In the same IGN interview, the devs said they’ll “never win” against cheaters, but said they’re being “extremely aggressive” against them.
