Treyarch explain why they kept Tac Sprint in BO6 before removing it in Black Ops 7

Call of Duty Operator running

Black Ops 7 is set to remove the controversial Tac Sprint as the default option, and the devs have now explained why it was in Black Ops 6 but not the new game.

Ever since it was first introduced back in Modern Warfare (2019), Tactical Sprint has been one of the most divisive features in Call of Duty. While some enjoy the way it lets them quickly get around the map, others have grown frustrated with the slower ADS speeds it brings.

Although the Treyarch-developed Black Ops Cold War is the only game since 2019 not to use it, Tac Sprint then returned to Black Ops 6.

However, the next game in the series, Black Ops 7, once again removes it as the default and instead relegates it to a Perk. Now, the devs have explained their thought process behind both moves.

Treyarch kept Tac Sprint in Black Ops 6 for consistency

Speaking to CharlieIntel, Treyarch Design Director Matt Scronce revealed that Tac Sprint is a topic that the team discusses a lot, and they decided to include it in Black Ops 6 so it wouldn’t be too jarring for players.

“With Black Ops 6, we wanted to kind of maintain consistency of what players had been playing for the past several years,” he said. “It had been several years since the last Black Ops game. So every game in between that had Tac Sprint. We didn’t want players to feel like we just took something away from them.”

Senior Director of Production, Yale Miller, also added that with the introduction of omnimovement, the feature fit well with what they were trying to do in BO6 from a movement point of view.

Then, when it comes to Black Ops 7, the devs used the removal of Tac Sprint as a way to distinguish the new game from the old.

“With Black Ops 7, we decided early on that was gonna be a very intentional change,” Yale added. “We wanted to separate the two games, and then we tested it a little bit with Slipstream.”

If you’re someone who prefers to have the feature in place, you’re still catered for in Black Ops 7, but you’ll need to equip the Tac Sprinter Perk.
