Diablo 4 players are calling for Strongholds to be something they only complete once after seven seasons of replaying them.
Strongholds are a fun mechanic in Diablo 4 where you raid a castle or keep, kill all the monsters, a powerful boss, loot the place, and then make it habitable again for the denizens of Sanctuary. Once you do, it’ll turn into a mini settlement that often contains a waypoint, new NPCs, and even quests.
Some Strongholds are mandatory for the story and will be automatically completed when a player skips the campaign. Also, while most waypoints in Diablo 4 only need to be unlocked once, and will remain active for future playthroughs with new characters, the ones in Strongholds need to be unlocked again in every run.
This is because most Strongholds reset when you start a new character each season, and while they were fun to play the first few times, in Season 7, some players are starting to find them tiresome. These players are now calling on Blizzard to make the completion of Strongholds an account-wide feature when Season 8 comes along.

Strongholds becoming “a huge buzz kill”
This would mean each Stronghold would only need to be liberated once, and like the Altars of Lilith and Renown, this progress would carry across every character playing on that account. Some of those players vented their frustration on Reddit with one saying:
“I really enjoyed doing Strongholds when the game first came out but now they’re just tedious and break up the game too much. Having to redo them on each alt character I make for the season is a huge buzz kill.
“Also, if they are account-wide unlocks, maybe they could bump back up the XP we get from completing them making them actually worth completing.”
Other players agreed, with one saying they just ignore them now unless they have to complete them, “I’ll just do the ones that are hindered otherwise. It’s too much of a hassle to redo all of them.”

Another said, “This. I just don’t bother with them. They are a waste of time unless there is a specific aspect you need from a specific NMD locked behind a specific Stronghold and in that case, I will do it but even then leveling.”
Some players have become so used to ignoring them every season they don’t even mind this issue, with one saying, “It doesn’t bother me since I just never do them lol.” Another player defended them saying, “They are great for early leveling tbh.”
However, in a game where leveling to endgame can be done incredibly quickly, Strongholds are no longer needed for this purpose and are starting to feel more like busywork every season.
The argument ties into a wider debate about how Diablo 4 is drifting away from being about traditional quests, and how seasons need to evolve if they’re going to remain interesting – especially now that there’ll be fewer expansions.
Players growing bored with Diablo 4’s seasons after Vessel of Hatred was always a risk, especially when the game insists on them starting a new character every time. Some tasks are bound to grow repetitive, and some players are calling for the series to be more like it used to be.
