British Airways scraps controversial staff coffee ban after backlash

British Airways has retracted its controversial policy that prohibited pilots and cabin crew from drinking coffee, tea, and other drinks in public areas while in uniform, following intense backlash from staff and unions.

The airline’s new guidelines, released on September 11, instructed crew to consume only water in public and even then, only “discreetly.” Non‑water drinks were limited strictly to staff cafeterias or restrooms.

Uniform and appearance rules were also tightened, covering everything from grooming and nail polish colors to commuting in uniform. Following intense criticism, the airline has backed down and walked back certain changes just days after they were issued.

Brewing controversy and the quick clamp‑down

Per AviationSource, union groups representing BA crew immediately raised objections to the revised guidelines, pointing out that during long shifts, there may be no opportunity for breaks in designated areas.

Staff said the rules ignored basic needs and morale. Time off amid transit and waiting around airports would have meant access to coffee going beyond just a luxury.

On September 13, 2025, British Airways issued an internal memo stating that the policy “had given the impression” of an outright ban, which had not been intended. Despite this, the memo stressed that crew are now allowed to drink non‑water beverages like coffee and tea while seated in cafes or gate areas.

Drinking while walking through terminals remains discouraged rather than strictly prohibited.
