A South Carolina teaching assistant has been arrested after allegedly spraying a foul-smelling “poop spray” at a high school, sparking weeks of disruption and over $55,000 in damages.

According to the Florence County Sheriff’s Office, 32-year-old Alexander Paul Robertson Lewis repeatedly used the spray at West Florence High School between August 25 and September 19. Officials say the prank triggered medical issues for students, including respiratory problems, and led to expensive inspections and repairs to the school’s air conditioning system.

Lewis was arrested on September 19 and charged with Disturbing Schools and Malicious Injury to Property. He was held at the Florence County Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing but was released after a judge announced his total bond was $9,000.

Facebook reacts to teacher’s “fart-spray” prank

The Sheriff’s Office press release has since gone viral on Facebook, where users have been cracking jokes about the bizarre arrest. Comments with hundreds of likes include: “So y’all found the gas leak?” and “If he would’ve done it once then it would’ve been just a harmless prank, but dude using an entire can of fart spray in a week is too much.”

Others were more critical, with one user pointing out that a parent’s complaint about her son’s asthma now has an explanation. Another wrote: “It’s fart spray people… it’s supposed to be for a ‘haha and a teehee’…” Others questions how fart-spray could be a crime at all.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not ruled out additional charges.
