A Virginia woman won $150,000 in the state lottery after asking ChatGPT to generate her numbers, and plans to donate every dollar to charity.
Carrie Edwards of Midlothian matched four numbers plus the Powerball in a recent Virginia Lottery drawing. Because she played with the Power Play option, her $50,000 win tripled to $150,000. She told lottery officials she had asked ChatGPT to suggest the numbers on her phone before purchasing the ticket.
Edwards recalled: “I’m like, ChatGPT, talk to me… Do you have numbers for me?”
Two days later, she was in a meeting at work when she received a notification to “collect your lottery winnings.” Edwards thought it was a scam at first, and quickly verified the news.
Donating all her winnings
“As soon as that divine windfall happened and came down upon my shoulders, I knew exactly what I needed to do with it,” she said. “And I knew I needed to give it all away, because I’ve been so blessed, and I want this to be an example of how other people, when they’re blessed, can bless other people.”
Edwards said she will divide the prize money evenly between three organizations.
The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration will receive funds in honor of her late husband, Shalom Farms will be supported for its food justice work, and the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society will be included to recognize her father’s legacy.
Back in July, another lottery winner made headlines after bringing home $1,000,000 twice in the same night.
