Fortnite’s March 11 update added a screen pop-up with a guy wearing a purple shirt; here’s what players should know about the Mortal Kombat Toasty Easter egg.

Chapter 6 Season 2 of Fortnite launched with Mortal Kombat’s Sub-Zero in the Battle Pass and his gauntlets acting as a Mythic item for Battle Royale players to find and use.

More MK content will eventually arrive later in the season as well, with fans eagerly awaiting the release of a Scorpion skin and Mythic.

However, Fortnite’s March 11 patch added in another piece of a MK history. Now some players have been struck with surprise by a purple shirt-wearing guy randomly popping up in the lower-right corner of their screens.

Fortnite x Mortal Kombat Toasty Easter egg explained

Soon after the 34.10 update went live, Fortnite players using Sub-Zero’s Ice Gauntlets noticed that a man in a purple shirt now pops up in one corner of the screen.

Confused fans wasted no time questioning the instance in the game’s subreddit. It’s not a glitch, though.

The man appears as a reference to Mortal Kombat’s iconic Toasty Easter egg, which originally debuted in MK2.

Mortal Kombat Sound Designer Dan Forden is the “Toasty guy” who players see in the pop-up, yet it only activated in MK2 when a user successfully landed a devastating uppercut.

According to Forden, the idea dates back to discussions within the MK team about taunts like “you’re toast.” That eventually turned into an inside joke that got thrown in the sequel, complete with his face and a falsetto soundbite of him calling out, “Toasty!”

The Easter egg has been featured in several Mortal Kombat entries since then. It returned in the Tournament stage for MK11 after a long absence. A reworked version of it also occurs, thanks to a modifier in MK1’s Invasions mode.

And now it’s resurfaced once again, this time in Fortnite Chapter 6 Season 2. Players taking on opponents while wielding Sub-Zero’s Ice Gauntlets should expect to see the “Toasty Guy” show up briefly, though he won’t shout out his ringing soundbite.
