Asmongold claims Marathon has one major problem

Marathon has been hot on the minds of many since it was revealed as a paid game with no proximity chat. Now, Asmongold has chimed in with another major concern for the game.

Bungie’s latest adventure, Marathon, is an FPS extraction game that pits teams of three against rival Runners (players) and security forces to scavenge for powerful weapons and loot and come out on top. Its developers are known for a variety of stellar games from Destiny 2 to Halo, so there’s plenty of hype and high expectations.

However, there’s also a lot of speculation, with excited players feeling worried about its nature as a paid game, especially after the similar title, Concord, flopped so tremendously. Nevertheless, tons are weighing in on the game’s potential success, but popular streamer Asmongold is convinced Marathon has one major problem.

Asmongold convinced Bungie won’t understand Marathon genre

After exploring the trailers, gameplay, and community sentiment on his stream, Asmongold shared his worries regarding Marathon.

“I am worried that they’re not really going to understand what makes this genre interesting,” explained the streamer as he explored the traditional design of most extraction shooters, which prefer to have “friction,” meaning additional challenges, loot without descriptions, a vareity of weapons, and a lack of handholding, like Tarkov.

“Making knowledge more of a component of the game makes it easier for hardcore players to maintain relevancy,” continued Asmon, who went on to explore the concerns regarding Marathon not holding its loot, meta, and characters under a shroud of mystery.

He then added that “making everything kind of a mystery that’s discovered is very important,” especially in an extraction shooter game.

Ultimately though, Asmongold was on the fence regarding Marathon’s future success, explaining: “You’re really going to have to play this game and see how the different missions are because a big problem, a lot of BRs and games have is that after you do a few runs, it feels like every single run is the same.”

With that in mind, an Alpha test has just been revealed for Marathon, so only time will tell whether Asmongold and the rest of the players think Bungie has understood the extraction shooter genre and whether their version of friction is a hit or a miss.
