Closing out the show of Gamescom Opening Night 2025, Black Myth: Wukong devs Game Science announced their follow-up — Black Myth: Zhong Kui.
This game is once again set to be heavily inspired by Chinese folklore, this time following mythical ghost hunter Zhong Kui. It’s set to be yet another action APRG, likely bringing back the Souls-like action of its predecessor.
First Black Myth: Zhong Kui trailer revealed at Gamescom
The trailer itself didn’t show off any gameplay, but did give us a brief introduction to the world, as well as a pretty cool-looking tiger that it appears will be our companion throughout the journey.
It also didn’t reveal any kind of release window, only that development has “kicked off.” But given that Wukong is only one year old, it’s unlikely to be anytime soon.
On the devs’ official website, it was confirmed that the game will be arriving on PC and all “mainstream console platforms.” This could mean that it will arrive on Xbox on day one alongside PlayStation, unlike Wukong, which was only PlayStation and PC to begin with.
For those not clued up on their Chinese mythology, Zhong Kui is a deity best known for hunting ghosts. So, just like the previous game adapted the tale of Sun Wukong from Journey to the West, expect the sequel to also loosely draw from the literature and depict him wandering “between hell and earth.”
Black Myth: Wukong was one of 2024’s most critically acclaimed games, and Dexerto called it a “beautiful stepping stone” in our review. So, we’ll have to see how the devs build on that solid foundation with new combat systems, gorgeous levels to explore, and, of course, brutally difficult bosses.
