Everything we know about RuneScape Dragonwilds

runescape dragonwilds

RuneScape: Dragonwilds is a new open-world co-op survival game from Jagex set in the same universe as its flagship MMOs, RuneScape 3 & Old School RuneScape.

While it shares the same name, Dragonwilds is a completely standalone experience developed in Unreal Engine where players, either solo or with up to three others, explore the continent of Ashenfall.

We’ve gathered everything there is to know about Dragonwilds so far and put it all in one easily digestible place, so let’s get started.

Platforms

RuneScape: Dragonwilds is currently only available for PC.

There has been no mention of a console version so far, though that doesn’t necessarily rule out an Xbox or PlayStation release in the future..

Trailers

Two Dragonwilds trailers were released on March 31, before another dropped on launch day. The first, an Official World Teaser Trailer, provided an overview of Ashenfall’s different biomes. Locations include verdant forests, poisonous-looking swamps, and subterranean dungeons.

The second trailer showcased gameplay for various activities, including combat and resource gathering. In addition to offensive magic, players can utilize the arcane to chop trees and build.

Just how intensive combat will be in the full game remains to be seen, but we do get a brief glimpse of at least one boss – a gigantic dragon.

The third and final trailer offered up story details, giving players background on the lore and an idea of what they’ll be working towards.

Gameplay

Unlike previous entries in the series, which were MMO RPGs, Dragonwilds is a fully-fledged survival game. As standard for the genre, resource gathering, base-building, and crafting are all integral to master, should you hope to topple the Dragon Queen and her brood.

Plenty of that RuneScape DNA is here though, as there are many skills to unlock and level up, taking your character from a low-level grunt just trying to stay alive to a powerful survivalist. This includes magical abilities, which can help you fend off the threats looking to damage your base and even speed up processes like cutting down trees for materials.

It can be played alone, but it also supports co-op lobbies of up to four players, so you can bring friends along to share the load.

When was RuneScape: Dragonwilds released?

RuneScape: Dragonwilds was shadowdropped on April 15, 2025. This was initially just supposed to be the date of the first gameplay deep dive, but instead, the game was released in early access as soon as the stream ended.

Connection to RuneScape 3 & Old School Runescape

As it’s set in the same universe as Jagex’s two long-running MMOs, Dragonwilds draws heavily from existing lore to flesh out its world. With that said, the setting, Ashenfall, is described as a “land hidden since time immemorial,” so this isn’t the RuneScape you know.

Even at this early stage, though, crossovers aplenty are hiding in plain sight. The Wise Old Man, an iconic character in RS3 & OSRS, is present, as is iconography representing the God of War, Bandos.

But don’t worry if you never played the older games, as this is a completely standalone experience that doesn’t require any existing knowledge. The nods and references are a welcome addition for long-time fans, but they’re not integral to the story.
