GTA 6 publisher Take-Two explains lower price tag for new Mafia game

Man looking worried

Mafia: The Old Country won’t be following the $80 game trend – instead, the upcoming action-adventure game will be releasing at a much lower price point. Fans are taking particular notice as this game is published by the same company that publishes GTA, Take-Two Interactive.

The debate surrounding the increased price of games originally stemmed from the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, when the Japanese video game company revealed that Mario Kart World and other titles would cost $80.

While Former PlayStation Boss Shuhei Yoshida said game price hikes are inevitable, the gaming community has voiced its concern. So, when it was revealed that Mafia: The Old Country would not be following the $80 trend, many were surprised.

Instead, players will be able to purchase the base game for $49.99, while a deluxe edition, which comes with bonus items, can be purchased for $59.99. However, there’s a specific reason behind this lower price point.

Mafia: The Old Country doesn’t follow $80 game trend

On May 8, 2K president David Ismailer revealed details about the new Mafia game. He revealed that Old Country embraces 1900s era Sicily, and is a mafia origin story that follows protagonist Enzo Favara, as he takes the oath and works his way up Don Torrisi’s crime family.

Unlike other recent releases like Oblivion Remastered, which can take upwards of 40-80 hours to complete, it sounds like Mafia: The Old Country will be a shorter experience.

“We think there’s a large audience for compelling stories that don’t require massive time commitments,” said Ismailer.

“We’re excited to offer a game like Mafia: The Old Country in our portfolio, and to provide a linear, highly-polished narrative experience that can easily complement the other more persistent games our players also love and engage with on a more consistent basis.”
