Hacker breaks into gacha game just to post one anime girl everywhere

Anime girl with pink hair

A popular gahca game was hacked in the strangest way possible, leaving both the devs and players baffled.

Blue Archive’s global servers were hacked on August 31, and instead of the usual nightmare of stolen data or broken accounts, players logged in to find the game completely overrun by one character. The attacker’s master plan? Turn the game into a shrine dedicated to their favorite anime girl.

As reported by Automaton, Blue Archive underwent six hours of emergency maintenance as devs scrambled to control the wave of anime girls that had swarmed the game. Banners were replaced, the cafe was filled with Koyuki models (and the occasional stray Hatsune Miku), and menus were renamed with her iconic “nihahaha” laugh.

The choice of character was strangely befitting as well, given Koyuki is a mischievous hacker best known for her pranks, chaotic energy, and love of digital troublemaking.

Seeing her plastered across every corner of the game felt like a prank and one that Koyuki would have orchestrated herself. However, it soon became clear that this wasn’t a late April Fools’ Day prank from the devs, as Nexon shut everything down for emergency maintenance.

In its official notice, Nexon explained that the hacker had tampered with client environment settings, and the hack appeared to come from an IP address in the Netherlands. Nexon has since stressed that player accounts, game progress, and payment information were never touched.

As an apology, every player who logs in between September 1 and September 8 will receive a substantial bundle of rewards. The package includes a 10-Recruitment Ticket, AP x500, Tactical Challenge Coin x150, Expert Permit x3,000, Credit Points x300k,  Lesson Ticket x7, Bounty Ticket x7, and Scrimmage Ticket x7.

While Nexon has promised to tighten security, it’s hoped that these rewards will soften the blow of being ambushed by an army of Koyukis.

The hack is certainly one of the strangest in recent memory: not a scam, not a ransom, just one person’s dream of a world completely ruled by Koyuki.
