Hollow Knight: Silksong has finally arrived, and players are already heaping praise on the game, with many agreeing it’s better than its predecessor.

Within hours of release on September 4, Silksong surged past 15,000 “Overwhelmingly Positive” reviews on Steam, with more than 33,000 reviews logged overall. So far, many reviews have praised the game’s fluid combat, expansive world, and challenging boss fights.

Many have gone as far as to say that it is better than the first Hollow Knight. “Pretty much everything in this game is either an upgrade, answer to, or alternative to something in Hollow Knight…Even small quality-of-life changes have been amazing,” wrote one player.

“Already better than the first game in every way that counts,” another reviewer wrote. “The combat in Silksong is an upgrade. The dynamic-ness, the healing, all of it, it’s crazy how fluid it feels, and there’s a crazy amount of builds and interesting combinations.”

It seems that the six-year-long wait was worth it, as Steam alone saw the sequel hit over 100,000 concurrent players within minutes, climbing to an all-time peak of more than 535,000 players by the end of the day. This makes it the second-highest of the year, trailing only Monster Hunter Wilds at around 1.38 million.

It even outpaced Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 (256,000), Assassin’s Creed Shadows (65,000), and indie hit R.E.P.O. (230,000), further cementing Silksong as one of the most successful launches for an indie title.

Silksong also took over Twitch, where it quickly rose to become the most-watched game on the platform, and was so popular that digital storefronts across Steam, Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox briefly went down.

While there are no official Metacritic scores yet for Hollow Knight: Silksong, critic reviews are expected to go live next week, so we’ll soon see if they align with the community’s glowing praise.
