How to fix Borderlands 4 incompatible version error

The Timekeeper Borderlands 4

Borderlands 4 is filled with chaos, whether you’re playing solo or with friends. That is unless you’re met with the ‘Incompatible Version’ error, halting that adventure.

There’s nothing quite like diving into Kairos to bag the best guns, play powerful characters like Harlowe, Amon, Vex, and Rafa, or trying out the world bosses and weekly events. There’s also nothing quite like doing all that with your friends.

However, thousands are being halted thanks to an ‘Incompatible Version’ error, stopping co-op players from getting into Borderlands 4. So, here’s all you need to know about it, from why you’re getting it to how you can potentially fix it.

Why are you getting ‘Incompatible Version’ in Borderlands 4

The ‘Incompatible Version’ for Borderlands 4 is caused by the recent patch, which went live on September 15.

Since then, players have been reporting various co-op issues, with the main being a message that reads: “The session you are trying to join is running an incompatible version of the game. Please try upgrading your game version.”

This usually occurs when you’re playing co-op, and essentially means the game hasn’t recognized that the patch has rolled out, and thinks at least one of you doesn’t have a fully updated game.

How to fix

Install the update

Naturally, given the reason why the ‘Incompatible Version’ exists, the first way you’ll want to attempt to fix the issue is by making sure you’ve installed the update.

Get you and all your friends to double-check their games are running on the current update. If they haven’t, make sure they update their game. If it was you, maybe keep it quiet, update your game, and then act surprised when it magically works again… we won’t tell anyone.

Reboot Borderlands 4

If the issue is still persisting, then it’s worth all of you completely shutting down your games. If you’re on PC, make sure you head into your task manager and shut Borderlands 4 down fully.

If you’re on console, be sure to shut the game down and end it if it’s running in the background. Then, restart the game. Hopefully it’ll work for you.

Wait for the patch

This issue is extremely new and is being reported by plenty of players, so it’s likely on the developers’ radar and will be fixed in a patch soon.

So, if you don’t want to reinstall your game and are happy to wait, this is probably the best option. Give it a few days (you can always play solo) and wait until the next patch likely solves the issue.

So, that’s all you need to know about the Borderlands 4 incompatible version error. While berating your friend for forgetting to update their game, be sure to check if you have the strongest character, or how to get some free rewards through the SHiFT codes. And no, you don’t need to get into the game to redeem them.
