No Man’s Sky’s update is finally here, bringing tons of new content to the game. However, it also brings a pesky little error that can be tough to get rid of.
While No Man’s Sky is certainly a thrilling single-player adventure, there’s nothing quite like exploring the stars with your friends. However, occasionally, usually after an update, you may come across a Version Mismatch error.
Well, the likelihood is that you have come across that error (it’s probably why you’re reading this). So, if you’re trying to play with your pals, here’s all you need to know about the Version Mismatch error, and of course, how to fix it.
Version Mismatch error explained
The No Man’s Sky Version Mismatch error is something that appears if you’re trying to start a multiplayer session.
Specifically, it’s what happens if you try and start a multiplayer session with a friend who hasn’t fully updated their game.
How to fix Version Mismatch in No Man’s Sky
Update your game
If you read the explainer above (bonus points to you), then that’s a major hint about how to fix the problem. You need to ensure your games are updated.

Regardless of your platform, get all your friends to check if their No Man’s Sky needs an update. If they do, get them to update it. Or silently do it yourself if you found out you’re the culprit, and pretend it was just a ‘weird bug.’
Check the No Man’s Sky socials
If the above doesn’t work, then it’s worth checking out the developers’ accounts on X or Discord. Sometimes, players have reported that their games are fully updated, but the error still appears.
Occasionally, this can happen just after an update, where the servers are still catching up to the version you need to be in. So, check in with the developers to see if it’s an issue they’re aware of.
Patience
The word no one wants to hear when they’re met with an error. However, it’s a common issue with No Man’s Sky that’s usually fixed in a few days to a week.

As explained by some players, “Typically, after a major update, it takes about 4 patches, or a bit over a week to settle back down. By next weekend at the latest, you should be up and running together again.”
So, if you’ve tried all of the above and it’s still happening, we recommend playing solo for now and just chatting with your friends instead.
That’s all you need to know about the Version Mismatch issue in No Man’s Sky. While sneakily waiting for your game to update, or tearing into your friend who hasn’t updated their game (and somehow always has the slowed wifi), be sure to check out more on No Man’s Sky.
