How to unlock the Dash skill in Silksong

Dash Silksong

If you have been wandering around Hollow Knight: Silksong and finding yourself staring at ledges you cannot reach, you are not alone.

One of the most common early frustrations is realizing that Hornet simply lacks the movement tools to cover gaps or dodge enemy attacks cleanly. The world feels like it is taunting you with hidden rooms, shortcuts, and treasures that are right there but still completely out of reach.

The solution is unlocking the Dash skill, called Swift Step. This upgrade gives Hornet the burst of speed needed to slip past enemies or leap into areas that once seemed impossible to access. Here is how to get it and what it does.

How to dash in Silksong

You unlock the Dash once you reach the Deep Docks are, but there’s a specific path you must follow.

  1. Progress until you reach Deep Docks. Here, keep moving to the right to stop by the Map Merchant if you want easier navigation.
  2. From the map merchant, climb up to the top and head to the area on the right.
  3. Defeat the enemies along the path until you find a lone platform surrounded by lava. As evidenced by the deer-like enemy, you can hop along the embers without getting burned.
  4. Once you reach the next platform, start to climb up until you spot an orange orb hanging from the ceiling.
  5. Strike the orb and step back. The explosion will open a hidden passage to a new area.
  6. Head into this new area, and make your way upward through these new enemies. Once you reach the top, take a right and enter the area above.
  7. To the left, clear the waves of enemies to get access to an exit southwest.
  8. Continue south and to the left to find the Swift Step idol, a bug-themed altar. Interact with it to unlock the Dash skill.

How to use Swift Step

Once unlocked, Hollow Knight: Silksong’s Dash becomes a core part of Hornet’s movement. Use it to quickly cover ground, cross gaps, or avoid incoming attacks.

  • On controller, hold or tap RT or R2.
  • Use Dash to slip through dangerous encounters or to close the distance with enemies.
  • Try experimenting with Dash in different areas, as it often reveals hidden routes that were previously out of reach.

Swift Step is a turning point that makes Silksong’s world feel far more open and connected. As long as Steam doesn’t break again, you should be able to enjoy the full game alongside all other half a million players.
