How to unlock & use Kinsects in Monster Hunter Wilds

MHW Kinsect build

The Kinsect is every Insect Glaive user’s little bug buddy, here to make your hunting life both easier and more complicated in Monster Hunter Wilds.

These little creatures are more than just fancy flying pests; they’re crucial for gathering extracts that boost your stats and give you an aerial edge.

In MHW, you’ll be spending just as much time looking at bugs as you do in the air. Let’s show you how to get more Kinsects and make the most of them.

What are Kinsects?

Kinsects are insect companions that Insect Glaive users can utilize in combat.

When wielding the Insect Glaive, you have not only a primary melee weapon but also a bug companion that can harvest Extracts to enhance your attack power and combos during battle.

You can also fire Kinsects directly from your Insect Glaive. While they don’t deal massive damage, they typically inflict negative status effects on enemies, such as Poison or Paralysis. The Insect Glaive is already an agile weapon, but Kinsects provide additional buffs.

How to get more Kinsects

You can manage your Kinsects by speaking with Gemma and selecting Manage Kinsects.

Here, you’ll be able to buy and raise Kinsects. Raising them is the most profitable option, but it requires materials, which can be obtained by completing quests and progressing through the main story.

As you increase your Hunter Rank, you’ll unlock more Kinsects, but you still need to craft them before you can use them.

During combat, you can harvest an Extract by pressing:

  • PC: R + Right Click
  • PlayStation: R2 + Triangle
  • Xbox: RT + Y

This sends your Kinsect flying toward an enemy. Depending on which body part you target, it will collect one of three Extracts:

  • Red Extract: Enables charged attacks for 90 seconds.
  • White Extract: Increases movement speed and jump height for 120 seconds.
  • Orange Extract: Grants Flinch Free for 150 seconds.

These also work in combination, adding an extra buff on top of those original effects.

  • Red + White → Increased attack power
  • White + Orange → Increased defense
  • Red + White + OrangeMaximum attack boost and altered attack animations

Kinsects can also be fired manually to deal slight damage and apply dust effects, such as Paralysis or Poison. The effect depends on the Kinsect type. To fire a Kinsect, use:

  • PC: R + Shift
  • PlayStation: R2 + R1
  • Xbox: RT + RB

Mastering Kinsect gives you a clear boost in combat, making the Insect Glaive one of the most dynamic – yet challenging – weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds.
