The Switch 2 is one of the most anticipated consoles ever, with Nintendo opting to give people more of what they loved about the original console with more power under the hood.
Sure, it’s got some additional bells and whistles, but people are really here for the games. Considering the strength of Nintendo’s first-party IP, it should come as no surprise that people are lining up in droves to try and get their hands on the console they need to play the new Mario Kart game.
And, even with issues that have come along with tariffs, pre-orders are still expected to be record breaking.
According to estimations from Bloomberg, the Switch 2’s launch will beat PlayStation’s launch records and become the most successful console launch of all time.
Nintendo Switch 2 launch set to be record-breaking
Nintendo’s production pipeline is already buckling beneath the weight of pre-orders, with Japan apologizing in advance for likely not being able to keep up with demand. Over 2.2 million pre-order requests were put in, not including people who plan to go in-person to stores and place their order as well.
And, from what people have been posting on social media, the lines to pre-order Switch 2s seem to be wrapping around the block.
“We received an extremely large number of applications, approximately 2.2 million people in Japan alone. However, this number far exceeds our expectations, and far exceeds the number of Nintendo Switch 2 consoles that can be delivered from the My Nintendo Store on June 5th,” explained Nintendo Japan President Shuntaro Furukawa.
Bloomberg’s analysis claims that the system could sell anywhere between 6 and 8 million copies, besting the launch records of the PS4 and PS5 and making for the most successful console launch of all time.

They also cited Pelham Smithers Associates, a Japan-focused equity research house, as part of this analysis.
“As Japan accounts for a third of the global Switch installation base, it implies 6.6 million pre-orders globally,” Pelham Smithers said.
This would handily best the Switch 1’s launch, with it selling under 3 million in the first month it was out according to Statista. And, whether it hits the lower end of 6 million or the upper end at 8 million, it’ll be a record breaking launch. The biggest question now may be whether or not Nintendo’s production line can keep up.
