The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has finally arrived after months of leaks and rumors, and while it’s overhauled the graphics and some of the gameplay systems, it’s a real shame they never added the ability to dual wield.
There’s a long history of badass characters who dual wield their weapons – Legolas, Kratos, Leonardo, Ahsoka Tano, and almost every character I made in Skyrim (okay, maybe not so much them).
Still, when waiting for Bethesda to drop the pretence and finally unveil Oblivion Remastered, I hoped I’d finally get to play as my totally original stealth archer who used a sword in one hand and a dagger in another.
Unfortunately, while Oblivion Remastered is an upgrade over the original in almost every way, it’s really disappointing that they couldn’t have given us more combat options with dual wielding.
That hand is hanging limply by my side as I slash at rats and skeletons, so come on, let me use another sword or dagger to double my damage.
Why can’t you dual wield in Oblivion Remastered?
There’s a simple reason you can’t dual wield weapons in Oblivion Remastered – you couldn’t in the original.
While they’ve changed quite a lot, adding the ability to use two weapons at once would have meant creating new animations and balancing the weapons for both single and dual wielding. So, I get it, but it’s still a shame.
No matter your race, the closest you can get is to use a sword and shield simultaneously, but you can only use one primary weapon at a time.
Magic is different in Oblivion, too. In Skyrim, you can equip spells to your hands, using a sword in one hand and a Fireball in another, or mixing two spells. In Oblivion Remastered, you equip your primary weapon, then hit RB/R1/C to use whatever spell you have selected, with your off-hand doing basically nothing.

Although there’s no official mod support for Oblivion Remastered, that isn’t stopping modders, so perhaps we’ll see dual wield come as a mod in the future.
