The Digital Edition of the PlayStation 5 is getting another key change, and it’s coming much sooner than many expect.
It’s been nearly five years since the PlayStation 5 first hit the market. In that time, Sony’s flagship console has gone through various shortages, impressive sales milestones, and a price hike in the US. Now, reports suggest another change is on the way, this time targeting the Digital Edition.
According to reliable leaker Billbil-Kun, Sony is preparing to roll out a brand new PS5 Digital Edition this month, which is the version that doesn’t include a disc drive. However, the reported revision won’t be the same as many already know; in fact, it’s getting a downgrade.
PS5 Digital Edition to get less storage with new console
Thanks to Billbil-Kun, the new console will be cutting the console’s storage down to 825 GB SSD, compared to the 1 TB SSD found in the current Digital model.

Billbil-Kun explained that “the storage space of the new PS5 Slim Digital Chassis E would be reduced to 825 GB, compared to 1 TB for the previous model (Chassis D).” Despite offering less space, the console won’t come with a lower price tag. Instead, the change is explained to be Sony’s way of avoiding a third price increase for the PS5 Digital Edition in Europe.
As mentioned, the model is expected to stay priced at €499, which is 100 euros higher than its launch price back in 2020.
For now, the change to the Digital Edition will be exclusive to Europe, and there’s currently no confirmation yet on whether Sony plans to bring the reduced-storage version of the Digital Edition to the US or other regions.
Nevertheless, the new console is speculated to be released on September 13, 2025, in Europe.
