A Pokemon card collector known as Kabuto King has stunned the community by building a stash of more than 1,000 copies of the same vintage card.
The Kabuto in question comes from the 1999 Fossil expansion, one of the earliest sets in the Pokemon TCG. Fossil introduced 62 cards themed around prehistoric Pokémon and remains a favorite among vintage collectors.
While most people who open the set chase Gengar, Dragonite, or Lapras, one unusual collector is searching for every copy of one of the only real Fossil Pokemon in the set.
1,000 Kabuto Pokemon cards and counting
Kabuto King has taken Pokémon card collecting to new extremes, amassing 1,042 copies of the same 1999 Fossil Kabuto card as part of his self-declared “Kabuto Legion.”
The collector’s mission is to obtain every first-edition Kabuto card from the vintage Fossil set. On September 15, he updated his followers on X with a new count, confirming he had acquired 42 additional copies to bring the total to 1,042.
The collection includes multiple PSA 10 slabs alongside hundreds of ungraded copies.
First-edition Kabuto cards from the Fossil set are considered more valuable than unlimited prints. As of writing, ungraded copies are valued around $2.71 on the secondary market, while PSA-graded cards above a 7 typically sell for more than $10. PSA 10s are worth about $85 each

How rare is first-edition Fossil Kabuto?
While Kabuto King’s haul is already massive, Kabuto King stated that tracking them down has become increasingly difficult. There is no official record of how many first-edition Kabuto cards were printed in 1999, but CGC Cards’ Population Report shows that 1,380 graded copies have been submitted as of September 2025. That still leaves over 1,000 graded Kabutos in circulation that the self-proclaimed king could pursue, though tracking them down may prove harder than ever.

As for rarity, Kabuto is a common in this set. That doesn’t mean it’s easy to find in the wild. It just means more of these cards were printed and distributed than the uncommon or rares in the set.
A quick glance at Ebay shows four first edition Kabuto cards for sale, each less than $5. As well as a single PSA 9 Kabuto.
