Should you help the cabbage thief in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2? Full quest guide

cabbage thief kingdom come 2

The cabbage thief is one of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2’s zaniest quests, but should you help this vegetable-stealing oddball? Spoilers for his identity and more are below.

Like Riddler Barley, the cabbage thief is one of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2‘s weirdest characters, and your choices can have a major impact on whether he continues being a menace for farmers everywhere – or if his antics get to continue after being unmasked.

How to start the cabbage thief quest

After speaking with Bailiff Thrush in Troskowitz and asking him about what’s going on around the town, you’ll have the quest added to your journal.

However, as the cabbage thief’s identity and location are a mystery, you won’t be given a compass direction to follow. Instead, you’ll need to do some detective work.

If you’ve already started the Bad Blood quest, then you may have already met the cabbage thief, and if this is the case, his location will already be marked on your map. If not though, you’ll need to track him down and quite literally follow a trail of cabbages.

Your first clue will be provided by the Peasant who hangs out at the Grocer south of Troskowitz. You can get to him quickly if you fast travel to Semine, then head east until you reach the crossroads which is where the Grocer is located.

He’ll give you another clue which is to head south from this location and follow the trail of cabbages until you reach Cabbage Cave.

This is located in a clearing in the woods, southwest of the Grocer, but the cabbage trail should lead you right to it.

Should you turn him in?

When you arrive at Cabbage Cave, you’ll be able to enter and identify the cabbage thief as Sauerkraut Pepa, a character you may have met during your travels, depending on your playthrough.

Pepa will explain his reasons for stealing cabbages to Henry, and you can decide to either turn a blind eye to his cabbage thievery, hand him over to the authorities, or kill him.

If you decide to let him go, he’ll reward you with some sauerkraut, and you can return to him for more if you like. However, if you turn Pepa into the bailiff, you’ll be rewarded with a hefty 789 Groschen – which is a significant sum of money in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.

Finally, you can kill him, loot his body and cave, and still collect the reward money. However, Pepa will defend himself and won’t go down without a fight. You’ll not be charged with murder either. The issue is, Pepa doesn’t really have much of value, so it’s much easier to get the reward money and simply turn him in.

Cabbage Cave is where the thief has been hiding.

From a rewards point of view, turning Pepe into the authorities is the best thing to do, as there’s a lot you can do with 789 Groschen, especially if it’s early in the game. Although, some may choose to ignore his crimes and return to him for more tasty sauerkraut.

You can always agree to keep his secret, get your sauerkraut, and then kill him, but this locks you out of getting any more – but you can still collect the reward money once he’s dead.

Like so much in KCD2 there is no right or wrong answer, and you need to do what you think is best. While turning Pepe is the best call from a reward standpoint (he’s breaking the law after all), we enjoyed keeping him around as an NPC, and his sauerkraut was a useful item when low on food.
