Fans are worried that Nintendo’s $70 Switch 2 bundle of Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 might actually look worse than the Wii originals.
Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel are among Nintendo’s most beloved 3D platformers. The first game launched on the Wii in 2007, followed by Super Mario Galaxy 2 in 2008, with both earning widespread critical acclaim. Years later, Super Mario Galaxy was re-released on the Switch as part of the limited-time 3D All-Stars collection alongside Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine.
During Nintendo’s September 12 Direct, the company announced a $70 bundle containing Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 for the Switch 2, revealed alongside the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy movie. While excitement was high, the trailer footage has sparked concerns over the quality of the ports.
Players spot texture downgrades in new Mario Galaxy footage
On the r/Mario subreddit, user RedditRedditReddit64 shared side-by-side screenshots comparing Super Mario Galaxy 2 on the Wii and Super Mario Galaxy from the 3D All-Stars collection with clips shown in the new Switch 2 trailer. The comparisons highlight what appear to be texture downgrades, with surfaces like diamond plate metal and soil appearing as flat colors, losing all detail.
“I and others have noticed this weird inconsistency regarding the new ports’ textures, where some of them are a straight improvement in detail while others look completely washed out,” they wrote. “I hope that these are simply unfinished textures that happened to slip through the videos and are awaiting replacements before release, but I have doubts.”
Several commenters echoed those concerns, though some speculated that video compression could be responsible for the apparent downgrade. Others expressed confidence that the footage was not final, pointing to Nintendo’s recent track record with polished visuals in titles like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bonanza.
