Megabonk is the latest indie game craze captivating the masses. From breakout success on Steam to massively popular streamers dubbing it one of the year’s best releases, it’s certainly one to watch.
Every so often, without any predictable cadence, a surprise indie game will appear seemingly out of nowhere. Amid the stream of blockbuster releases and critically acclaimed hits on the calendar, these under-the-radar gems manage to break through the noise.
The likes of R.E.P.O., Lethal Company, Umamusume, and PEAK come to mind, and now, another standout in the category is emerging. Megabonk is the latest game to turn heads far and wide as an overnight success story.
So what exactly is the game, and just how big has it already become? Read on to learn all about this chaotic indie release.
What is Megabonk?
Megabonk isn’t hiding what it’s trying to be. Following closely in the footsteps of another mega-popular indie hit, its developer wants to recapture the success of Vampire Survivor, just in 3D.

So, rather than playing from a top-down perspective as waves of increasingly difficult enemies swarm around you, Megabonk drops you into a third-person view.
Gameplay is nearly identical, at least in structure. Your character automatically attacks nearby enemies, and with each passing round, you get to choose from a set of three upgrades or new pieces of equipment.
The idea is to watch your build get absolutely out of control as quite literally thousands of enemies pile up on screen. Of course, much like its inspiration, it aims to be endlessly replayable too, with dozens of distinct characters lending to countless variations.

Graphical fidelity isn’t the priority, and Megabonk even leans into that with wild visuals and wacky enemy designs. Instead, it’s all about the addictive gameplay loop keeping you hooked for hours on end.
Priced reasonably at $9.99 USD, this recipe has proven successful once again, with Megabonk rising up the charts in short order.
Megabonk explodes on Steam & Twitch
With an affordable price and easily captivating concept, Megabonk has already proven a massive success online.
Through word of mouth alone, it’s peaked at a concurrent player count of 36,077 players on Steam at the time of writing. This puts it among the Top 30 most popular games on the platform at this point in time, holding strong above big hitters like Deadlock, Overwatch 2, and many others.
It’s also ranked among the Top 15 best sellers on Steam, as thousands decide to check it out for themselves.
Meanwhile, over on Twitch, it’s already drawn over 2 million hours of cumulative watch time, with a peak of over 58,000 concurrent viewers in the category, according to data from SullyGnome. With the likes of xQc and shroud jumping in, many others are following suit and streaming their runs. The latter even labeled it a Game of the Year contender.
As new characters are unlocked and exciting builds are discovered, Megabonk looks destined to continue climbing the charts, at least in the very near future. Games like these may not have the longest legs in the streaming world, but there’s no denying Megabonk is the big craze everyone is paying attention to in September 2025.
