14-year-old dies after injecting himself with butterfly remains

Davi Nunes Moreira

A 14-year-old boy in Brazil has died days after injecting himself with butterfly remains, with Brazilian authorities refusing to rule out the possibility that he was taking part in a social media trend.

Davi Nunes Moreira died in hospital in Planalto, Brazil, after reportedly spending seven days there in “agonizing pain” following the injection.

It was reported that he mixed a dead butterfly in water before injecting the solution into himself prior to his death on Wednesday, February 12.

After telling his dad that he had just got hurt while playing, Davi’s health suddenly and rapidly started deteriorating, at which point he decided to come clean to his father and the medics who were supporting him.

While the post-mortem hasn’t been fully finalized, the death has been possibly linked to toxins in the mix that “caused Davi’s body to shut down as he went into septic shock.”

Was it part of a social media trend?

Some local reports in Brazil have attributed the death to a social media trend that Moreira was taking part in, and while police haven’t yet ruled that out as a possibility, there is little support in the way of confirming it, either.

Dexerto has been unable to identify any social media trend across multiple platforms that would require someone to do this.

However, there have been various social media trends that can be extremely dangerous and, in some cases, fatal.

One of the most well-known is the blackout challenge, which requires people to hold their breath for as long as possible before passing out, and has resulted in the death of multiple teens participating.

Another is ‘chroming’, which sees people inhaling toxic fumes and, once again, has caused the death of multiple teens and children.
