Former Rockstar Games developer Obbe Vermeij has explained why Grand Theft Auto fans shouldn’t fear another GTA 6 delay just yet.

For more than a decade, the gaming world has been waiting for Grand Theft Auto 6. The highly anticipated next instalment in the GTA franchise was supposed to release at the end of 2025. However, Rockstar Games found cause for a slight delay.

At the start of May 2025, the iconic game developer announced that GTA 6 would, instead, be released on May 26, 2026. This, they said, is because “we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”

Naturally, that delay frustrated fans who had been hoping to play the new game in 2025. Take-Two, Rockstar’s publishers, have said that they’re confident the devs will stick to the new release despite fans fearing a second delay.

Ex-GTA dev has key month for GTA 6

Well, according to former Rockstar Games technical director Obbe Vermeij, GTA fans have nothing to worry about. At least just yet, anyway.

“Rockstar had a free choice and picked May 26. They’re confident,” Vermeij, who left Rockstar following Grand Theft Auto 4, said after being quizzed on Rockstar potentially delaying again.

“They’ll make the final call ~5 months out. Any “GTA6 delayed” rumour before December is clout-chasing,” he added.

December has been the next key window for GTA fans anyway, with many expecting the holiday month to bring either pre-orders or a third trailer.

Despite that, fans have still been hoping for more before then. They’ve continued to scour the two trailers and in-game screenshots for easter eggs and details.

Plus, a car that was apparently used in GTA 6’s development went up for sale, so they’ve been keeping an eye on that too.
