Ex-PlayStation President says GTA 6 needs to find a “balance” to avoid $100 price

Former PlayStation Boss Shuhei Yoshida has weighed in on concerns that GTA 6 will cost over $100 as games become more expensive.

GTA 6 is slated to release May 26, 2026 after being pushed back from its original Fall 2025 release window, but one of the big talking points about VI has been how much it will cost.

Since the game’s announcement, fans have eagerly debated if Rockstar will price the game above industry standards – and those theories got a boost after Nintendo revealed $80 games for the Switch 2.

While GTA 6’s price hasn’t been confirmed yet, former PlayStation President Shuhei Yoshida won’t rule out a $100 price tag for the upcoming open-world juggernaut.

Rockstar could “jump at the chance” to price GTA 6 at $100

Speaking with PlayStation Inside, Yoshida explained that $100 games were inevitable and would have happened regardless of Nintendo pricing Switch 2 games higher.

“Everything in video games today is more advanced and more technologically demanding than ever before, and therefore requires more resources. Each publisher or manufacturer sets the price of its games, of course, but in the end, the heart of the matter lies in production costs,” he said.

He further stated that studios create remakes and remasters or have their own subscription services to help fund the production of AAA games.

Fans have been counting the number of holes in this window to keep themselves occupied in the long wait for GTA 6.

“It’s a kind of ‘easy’ solution to bring on profits that ultimately help finance new games,” he said.

Rockstar has followed this formula a bit in the years since its last big AAA game in Red Dead Redemption 2. While the company has made billions from GTA Online, it also introduced a subscription service in GTA+, rereleased GTA 5 several times and launched a lackluster remake of GTA Trilogy.

“So, I don’t know if Rockstar will jump at the chance to set the price of GTA 6 at 90 Euros ($100 USD) or more, to speak with your currency, but the situation is this… a balance must be found between production costs and game prices. GTA 6 will obviously be a case in point, but if you take the example of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the game is just as phenomenal visually, despite the fact that the team only has around thirty people.”

According to the former PS President, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s success, despite being made by just 33 people, is a way forward for the industry.

“You can make excellent games with tighter teams and budgets without compromising quality,” he explained.

We’ll have to see exactly how Rockstar decides to price GTA 6, but with the game still over a year away, we might be waiting quite a while to find out.
