Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to be gaming’s first ‘AAAAA’ release, according to a rival publisher and fans can’t wait.
The end of 2025 was also supposed to mark the end of a decade-long wait for Grand Theft Auto fans. They were expecting to ring in 2026 by being able to play GTA 6 at long last. However, Rockstar needs a little more time and, instead, it will release on May 26, 2026.
Despite the delay, the excitement around the highly anticipated title hasn’t dampened whatsoever. Fans are still combing through the two trailers and hundreds of screenshots to search for clues about what’s coming in mid-2026.
The delay has also made other developers and publishers scramble, too. Many wanted to avoid the initial GTA 6 release window, but now they’re having to consider moving from May too.
GTA 6 set to be first ‘AAAAA’ game around
According to Devolver Digital co-founder Nigel Lowrie, Grand Theft Auto 6 has the “scope” to become gaming’s first AAAAA release.
“I mean, there are AAA games and then there’s AAAA games and I’d argue that Grand Theft Auto is potentially the AAAAA game; it’s just bigger than anything else both in the scope and scale of the game and the kind of cultural impact that it has and the attention it demands,” Lowrie told IGN.

AAA was first adopted by the gaming industry back in the 1990s to describe the blockbuster games. The ever-popular franchises like Call of Duty, Fallout, Final Fantasy, Halo, Grand Theft Auto, and beyond are stellar AAA releases.
Ubisoft has previously announced that Beyond Good and Evil 2 and Skull and Bones would both be AAAA games.
However, it hasn’t been adopted by anyone else.
