Real police chase ruins woman’s Grand Theft Auto game by crashing into her bedroom

A woman’s Grand Theft Auto session turned into reality when a car being chased by police smashed into her home while she was mid-game.

Emma Graves, 44, from Leeds, was playing GTA on her PlayStation when chaos erupted just feet from where she sat.

“I literally couldn’t make this up,” she said. “It was not funny at the time, but it was afterwards.”

Graves explained she had been evading police in-game when she suddenly heard “engines revving, screeching brakes, then multiple impacts” outside her flat.

“The car hit three others, tore through mine and my neighbor’s fencing and crashed into my bedroom wall, just feet from where I was sitting. The flats physically shook,” she recalled. “If it had been even slightly worse, I wouldn’t be here to tell you this. Police were shouting at someone to put their hands up and put the weapon down.”

Fortunately, her mother, who she cares for full-time, was not at home. Graves called family members to support her in the aftermath.

Police make 8 arrests after car crash during GTA game

West Yorkshire Police reportedly confirmed that eight arrests were made following the July 2 crash as part of a wider firearms investigation. No charges have yet been brought.

Graves, who moved into the council flat in late 2024, said the crash highlighted ongoing dangers on the road near her home. She has since launched a petition calling for urgent safety measures.

“This isn’t new,” she said. “Cars and motorbikes have been tearing through this road, using it as a shortcut. There are no speed bumps, no enforcement, and no deterrents. Drivers corner aggressively, rev engines at all hours, and regularly come within inches of hitting pedestrians — including disabled residents and children.”

The bizarre timing has drawn comparisons to the game itself. Earlier this year, a Utah teenager filmed himself claiming he was “in GTA” while leading police on a real chase.

For Graves, though, it was no joke. What started as a gaming escape nearly ended in tragedy when GTA 6 came crashing into her house.
