The CEO of Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive, doesn’t believe AI will ever be able to compete with GTA 6.

GTA 6 is still slated to release in Fall 2025, despite players anxiously awaiting Rockstar to finally unveil the game’s second trailer.

For months, fans have been eagerly ruminating about GTA 6’s price tag, too. Many analysts have suggested VI could retail for over $100, and that fear amplified following Nintendo’s announcement of how Switch 2 games will be priced.

As the community feverishly yearns for more details, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has reiterated that GTA 6 will ‘set entertainment benchmarks for the entertainment industry’ and shot down the idea that AI could produce a better version.

Take-Two CEO says AI can’t make a better GTA 6

Zelnick spoke to Carolyn Dailey for her book ‘The Creative Entrepreneur,’ where he touched on the threat of AI and how it may impact game development.

According to Zelnick, he isn’t worried about generative AI being able to produce anything on par with what Rockstar has built with GTA 6.

Take-Two isn’t worried about AI making a better GTA 6.

“Those who think you can push a button and say: ‘Create the next GTA 6 and make it bigger and better, here’s all the code and the marketing plan,’ you’re not going to get anything you can work with,” he explained.

“It’s a combination of massive data sets, large language models and computing – and all of that, as I said, is backward-looking,” he added. “What comes out is a predictive model. Some of the stuff we do can be predictive, but the really creative stuff can’t be. The big creative leaps forward will be generated by humans.”

The Take-Two boss further stated that hiring the best creators and making sure they keep trying new things is the best approach studios can take to be successful in the games industry. While AI might be able to build off what came before it, Zelnick doesn’t believe it’s capable of creating a hit game.

“This is why I’m not worried about AI creating hits, because it’s built on data that already exists. It’s backward-looking. Big hits are forward-looking and therefore need to be created out of thin air. Being the most creative means not just thinking outside the box; it means there is no box.”
