Blue Essence is League of Legends free currency, earned by simply playing the game consistently, that can be used to buy new Champions to play. Though this previously often came at great expense for newer champs, a major reduction in price is about to make things a lot more affordable.
As confirmed in a recent Riot Dev Update, the Blue Essence price for all Champions will be reduced by 50% when Patch 25.05 goes live on March 5. In a statement on the decision, the developer confirmed the decision is largely motivated by helping newer players.
“This change should especially help newer players build out their champion roster, making the game more accessible and, in turn, helping League continue to thrive long-term,” they said.
That translates to champions like Ambessa and Aurora being available for just 3150 BE. This decision comes among a raft of changes designed to placate a community that had become increasingly unhappy with the alterations Riot had made in 2025 so far.
The return of Hextech Chests and the Blue Essence Emporium

The headline announcement during this round of updates from the developer is that Hextech Chests will be back in Patch 25.05, releasing on March 5. Starting in Act 2, players will be able to earn up to ten Chests across the course of an Act, with eight coming from the free Seasonal Pass and a further two coming from the Honor system.
The developer was also keen to clarify that these returning Chests would be identical to the ones that players were previously able to earn through Champion Mastery.
In addition, Your Shop will return to the game in patch 25.06, with the Blue Essence Emporium returning one patch later in 25.07.
In their conclusion, Riot Games said the following about this raft of changes to many of the game’s systems:
“Now, as we wrap up, we want to acknowledge that we know getting League to the right place isn’t about just one set of changes. It’s about continually refining and improving the game. We think today’s updates are an important step, and we’ll keep tracking how these changes feel, talking with all of you about how things are landing, and making adjustments.”

“We’ve always built League along with all you, the community. Thank you for sticking with us and hearing us out, and we look forward to continuing to work with you to make sure League is the best game it can be. Thanks so much, and we’ll see you on the Rift.”
Though this will be an ever-evolving state of affairs, there’s little doubt that many players will be happy with this new direction in the short term.
