Riot confirms Hextech Chests are coming back to League of Legends

Hextech Chest Mordekaiser League of Legends

Hextech Chests have been the source of significant controversy in the League of Legends community since the start of 2025, after the beloved system was removed. Now, after persistent uproar from the community, Riot has confirmed they are coming back.

In a Dev Update video, the developer confirmed that in Act 2 (the patch releasing on March 5), Hextech Chests will be returning, with players able to earn up to ten Chests and Keys in each Act moving forward.

Eight of those Chests will be spread across the free pass, replacing the Seasonal Skin and the 1350 or Lower Skin, a move the developer claims has been made in direct response to player feedback over the last two months.

The final two Chests for the Act will be earned via an as-yet-unspecified method related to the Honor system. Additionally, Riot also confirmed that these Chests would be identical in nature to the ones previously earned through the Champion Mastery system.

Hextech Chest reversal marks a major U-turn in policy

As Dexerto reported on February 20, Riot Games previously doubled down on their decision to remove Hextech Chests, after considerable backlash from the player base. They cited long-term sustainability concerns as major factor in their thinking.

That came after some called for a boycott of the game over the decision, though this didn’t materialize into any significant action in the end.

In a statement included with the reversal decision, Riot shared the following message for players:

“Now, as we wrap up, we want to acknowledge that we know getting League to the right place isn’t about just one set of changes. It’s about continually refining and improving the game. We think today’s updates are an important step, and we’ll keep tracking how these changes feel, talking with all of you about how things are landing, and making adjustments.

“We’ve always built League along with all you, the community. Thank you for sticking with us and hearing us out, and we look forward to continuing to work with you to make sure League is the best game it can be. Thanks so much, and we’ll see you on the Rift.”

The news will come as a major relief to many, with the additional changes to the Blue Essence currency providing further relief for those who balked at 2025’s changes.
