Marvel Rivals leak details Overwatch 2-like loot box system

A Marvel Rivals dataminer has discovered an Overwatch 2-style loot box system in the Season 4 game files.

Those who enjoy live service games are no strangers when it comes to loot boxes. While Marvel Rivals doesn’t have this feature, back in December 2024, when it was released, leakers found assets and icons related to loot boxes.

This discovery left some players upset, though the devs quickly followed up, saying that the game won’t feature these randomized virtual items. At the time, they assured fans they were “leftover content in the game’s development.”

Now, as we approach the release of Season 4, however, another dataminer has discovered more insight into this system and how it may have worked.

NetEase previously mentioned that they won’t be adding loot boxes, but as seen from findings from RivalsInfo, the idea certainly came to mind throughout development.

In a post on X, the dataminer explained that “Mysteries” is the codename for loot boxes in the files.

What they discovered is essentially the logic for the “Mysteries” player component in Season 4. This logic determines the odds and how loot boxes could have provided luck-based rewards to players.

They explained: “Within this component, there are multiple references to mystery box logic, such as ‘cosmic mysteries number’ and ‘BOX_OPEN_HISTORY_CHANGE’, which further confirms that it relates to the old loot box system.”

Of course, there’s always a possibility this may be even more leftover code, so it’s better not to jump to conclusions just yet.

Rest assured, even the dataminer reminded fans that they had seen nothing referencing purchasing a loot box, as these could “very well be earned from challenges or the Battle Pass,” similar to how it works in its competitor, Overwatch 2.

Overwatch 2 itself has a long history with loot boxes. And while the title may serve as the closest point of comparison for how such rewards could potentially be unlocked, its loot box system has gone through major changes over time.

When they returned in Season 15, Blizzard introduced clearer drop rates, duplicate protection, and guaranteed rarities, a sharp contrast from the original that featured a more randomized model.
