Marvel Rivals only has one S tier tank hero – and he’s game-breakingly good

Marvel Rivals heroes standing together

Between a number of nerfs to the most dominant tanks in prior Marvel Rivals metas and one Tank in particular being discovered by the playerbase as the days go by, there’s a clear pick for the best tank in Marvel Rivals. He’s an entire tier above everyone else.

This isn’t to say tanks are bad in Marvel Rivals, far from it. The A tier is chock full of them, with each one having a unique set of strengths – but also some big weaknesses. Nerfs to heroes like Magneto, Doctor Strange, and Hulk who previously filled out the S tier have all zoned them all out of being definitively the best picks in the game.

That is, outside of one hero. A newcomer to the roster that’s had a big impact in games. Which isn’t hard considering just how massive this hero is.

That’s right, The Thing is the absolute best tank in Marvel Rivals. Despite being a bit underwhelming when he came out, he’s grown to be an absolute solo queue menace.

Unwavering and unkillable

The Thing’s greatest strength comes in the form of exactly what you’d expect from a tank: He doesn’t die, and he often can’t be CCed. He doesn’t require a front-facing shield to stay alive, this man really is just that bulky if you know what you’re doing.

There are a few keys to playing The Thing properly, the main one being that his Stone Haymaker is one of the best abilities in the game, bar none. If you’re not right clicking constantly, you’re not playing The Thing correctly.

Not only does it deal 90 damage in a massive radius in front of you, it also gives him a short dash forward, a shield for 50 during the windup, punches through shields, and can be mixed into a combo with his normal jabs to deal a ton of damage.

50 shield may not sound like much, but it’s often the difference between life and death and can mitigate hundreds of damage for free if used properly. Sit around a corner or behind your cart, and you’ll be able to poke people down while taking very little damage.

This’ll also quickly build ult. Seeing as The Thing’s ult only costs 2800 energy, hitting a few members of the enemy team with one right click can grant him 10% ult charge instantly. Just rip ults with The Thing, he charges them so fast it’ll be back up before you know it. Almost no hero charges up as fast as he can, and his ult can completely change fights every time it’s used.

Also, his ability to shut down mobility is super strong both for protecting backline and diving the enemy. Considering he can just dash onto a teammate to get out after his charge, using this to get in is relatively low-risk as long as your team has your back. There is a trick to getting this to do more damage, though.

By going into the settings menu and enabling the “Hold to Dash” option, you can your slam to go off in just one button press. This’ll let you cancel it before you even take a step, giving you access to instantly deny mobility.

The Thing does have one Achilles Heel, though: His teammates not being close enough. Most of the time, when you die playing this hero, it’s because your teammates are playing so far back that you can’t dash to them.

Keep tabs on where your allies are at all times so you can bail when you have to. But beyond that, The Thing has very few weaknesses.

The Thing Marvel Rivals

Need a solo tank? He can do it. Got another tank on your team? He pairs well with everyone. He does a ton of damage, doesn’t die, has mobility, CC, can counter most ults. If you’re looking for someone who can, if you’re good enough, put every game on his back, The Thing is the man you’re looking for. He’s so good that it’s hard to justify putting any other tank in S tier.
