Marvel Rivals has one huge issue ranked issue that is ruining matches in higher-skilled lobbies, and NetEase doesn’t seem intent on fixing it.

Marvel Rivals’ has become a huge success in the hero shooter space, but months after its release, and some of its design problems are beginning to rear their heads.

While some players have recently criticized the game’s questionable balance and performance issues continue to run rampant, some higher-leveled players are beginning to grow frustrated at the game’s ranked system. Due to certain mechanics in place, some are claiming that players are getting boosted and entering high ranks.

How Marvel Rivals’ ranked system is boosting players

In Marvel Rivals, there are numerous systems in place that make it significantly easier to climb compared to other games.

For starters, you will generally gain more LP than you lose despite streaks and matchmaking. Additionally, there is a generous demotion protection system that allows you to lose one or two games before demoting at 0 LP.

There’s also a “Chrono Shield” mechanic that charges as you continue to lose games. When a Chrono Shield is fully charged, your next loss won’t cause you to lose any points at all. You can also keep a Chrono Shield up while winning.

Players often have issues with ranked modes in general, so individually, these two mechanics sound generally okay. However, because both of these systems exist at once, ranked becomes more of a testament on how much time you can invest in the game.

Top players are getting frustrated by Marvel Rivals’ ranked

High ranked players are beginning to take notice and grow frustrated with ranked in general. One streamer Eskay stated that games are a “horrible coinflip” because it’s “way too easy to climb.”

“Imposters in every rank with sub 50% winrate and climbing really high because they played a lot,” she said. “You lose if you get one or more of these players. Rank reset won’t fix it.”

Some players are even starting to regret backlash against a midseason ranked reset, as they believe it would have helped combat the issue of inflated ranks.

“The devs designed the competitive system,” one player wrote. “They knew it was inflationary and that’s why they wanted to keep rolling back ranks in the midseason patch too…GM is insanely inflated, ranks in general are heavily inflated.”

The community are also questioning why Marvel Rivals’ lacks placement matches for new seasons, which would help better sort out underperforming players and smurfs as well.

“With a lack of placement matches, and the generous ELO system, anything that isn’t high ELO is going to be very random,” said another player.

Overall, it’s clear that some improvements to the ranked system need to happen. But on the bright side, NetEase has shown that they are rather receptive to player feedback, so we’ll likely see some adjustments going forward.
