Minecraft has moved away from its numbered updates, meaning we’re now getting smaller (but more frequent) patches. As such, you’ll need to know just how to update Minecraft on Bedrock or Java for your PC, Xbox, PlayStation, or mobile.
Thanks to the announcement in July 2025, Mojang has released an exciting new update for those wanting to play in the beta or snapshot. Known at the moment as the Fall Drop, players can expect to see the addition of the adorable Copper Golem and the introduction of Copper Tools and armor.
While no release date is there yet, there are still updates that need sorting, and you can always take part in the beta if you want to try it out. So, if you’re looking for the latest items or features, here’s how to update Minecraft and what that mysterious Outdated Client message means.
How to update Minecraft
Nintendo Switch 1 & 2
Updating Minecraft on the Nintendo Switch is relatively easy:
- Hover over Minecraft in your library.
- Press the + button on your Switch or Switch 2.

- Scroll down to Software Update.
- If an update is due, you can complete it from here.
Once the update has been processed and downloaded, simply head back into the game and enjoy.
Bedrock & Java for PC and Mac
Since there are two versions of Minecraft on the PC there are two different instructions to follow. If you own a Mac then you’ll be using the Java Edition.
Bedrock edition
Windows PC players who enjoy the Bedrock edition for Minecraft should see their game update automatically. If it doesn’t, here’s how to update Minecraft for Windows:
- Open the Microsoft store.
- Look at the bottom left for Downloads and click.

- There you’ll see a list of updates you need to make for your games. Look for Minecraft for Windows.
- Either click Update all, or click on Update on the right of Minecraft for Windows.
- The update will start automatically.

Java edition
The Java edition will require you to download the Minecraft launcher, which can be done via the Minecraft website. Once that’s done, follow these steps:
Related
- Open up the Minecraft launcher.
- Click on Minecraft Java Edition.

- Next to play, click Installations.
- Select ‘Latest Release‘.
If the game’s not at the latest release, doing the above will bring you into the right version.
Xbox
When it comes to updating Minecraft on your Xbox, it’s similar to what every other game needs on the console:
- Go to ‘My Apps & Games‘.
- Press the More Options button on Minecraft.

- Select ‘Manage game & add-ons’.
- Then press ‘updates‘.
- If any are available, they will be available here and you can update them.
PlayStation
Similar to the Xbox, your PlayStation should automatically update Minecraft. However, for some players, their updates are not set to automatic. If this is the case, follow these steps:
- Find Minecraft in your library.
- Select the game using the ‘options‘ button.

- Click ‘check for update‘.
- Update if needed and play.
Thankfully, due to the nature and size of most Minecraft updates, the download shouldn’t take too long.
iOS and Android
Updating Minecraft on your iOS or Android works in the same way as many other apps. Follow these steps:
- Go to the App Store or Google Play.
- Head to manage your apps and device.

- If needed, it will prompt you to update Minecraft.
- Press update and wait for it to install.
Some mobiles will hold back an app update, so be sure to check regularly in case you’ve missed a newer version of the game.
Outdated Client error explained
If you’re attempting to play Minecraft and are getting the Outdated Client error, then you’re in the right place, as it means your game isn’t fully updated to the current version and is therefore outdated.
So, if you do have that error, scroll up, find your platform, and check for an update. The chances are, you need one for your game.
That’s how to update Minecraft on your chosen console. While your game is updating, be sure to check out the best Minecraft seeds, some new house ideas, or even the best servers you just have to try out.
