The Overwatch 2 community is praising Blizzard for going back to its roots and returning many of Overwatch 1’s most popular features.

Overwatch 2 released a major content update in its fifteenth season with the introduction of Hero Perks, a mechanic that granted characters new abilities and gave new life to the once stagnant game.

However, Hero Perks weren’t the only content introduced in Season 15. In fact, a thread on Reddit went viral, praising Blizzard for concepts they reintroduced from Overwatch 1. Some of these are more obvious, such as the return of loot boxes, but there are finer details that the community appreciated as well.

Overwatch players are enjoying the return of older UI elements

In the viral thread, players chimed in on how Blizzard returned some older nostalgic UI elements. One user noticed a return of the old “Overtime UI,” a stark difference from the more modernized font that was initially present in Overwatch 2.

“It feels a lot [nicer to be honest],” wrote one user. “[Overwatch 2’s] was just bland and boring. If I’m playing a comp game I want the whole experience to be exciting.”

One user said that these were small details but part of what made the original Overwatch special.

“Changing fonts and getting rid of ‘on fire’ seem like miniscule changes, but they were things that made Overwatch iconic,” replied another user. “Removing the iconic elements make no sense and when so many are removed it adds up, people notice.”

Players are still chiming in on older elements that they want back in the game. One of the most popular features of Overwatch 1, for instance, were endgame cards which allowed players to acknowledge strong performing players at the end of a match. Fortunately, this is a mechanic the Overwatch team is also open in bringing back.

Other players noted how some of Overwatch 2’s older UI elements felt “rushed” which led to a sloppier experience overall.

“The [Overwatch 2] UI was really, really rushed,” one player said. “In the past six months or so more elements have slowly become more similar to [Overwatch 1], such as the main menu font, but even the indicator for how many friends are online.”

As Overwatch 2 creates new mechanics and heroes, it’s nice to see that the team are willing to revisit features from Overwatch 1 as a way to make the game better as well. Loot boxes are a prime example of something that was present in the first game that’s been improved upon and revisited for the sequel.

Some could argue these features should never have been removed in the first place, seeing as players feel like the game is much better for having them added back.
