Overwatch 2 has just brought back loot boxes, and while players are glad they’re finally back, they’ve noticed there’s one “issue” with them.
After what seemed like a dry spell, Overwatch 2 has managed to crawl its way back up – something that many have hoped to happen for a while now, especially since the release of its competitor, Marvel Rivals.
There are a ton of solid reasons for this resurgence too. New perks have made the game feel like a breath of fresh air, not to mention the number of free cosmetics players can snatch from the Legendary Rainy Day Mercy skin, along with the ones from Twitch Drops.
Then we have loot boxes, which also give cosmetics for free, though at random. As a highly requested feature to return, it’s definitely a welcome addition – but players think there’s one issue with them in their new form.
Opening Overwatch 2 loot boxes don’t feel the same, according to players
Shortly after loot boxes were brought back, players quickly noticed that they had a different animation when they opened them.
In a Reddit thread titled “My only issue with loot boxes coming back,” one user explained: “They cut the animation so we only see the pedestal things flip up in the air but not the satisfying thunk, thunk, thunk, thunk when they land.”

In Overwatch 1, as soon as you open a loot box, all the items will look like they bounce out of the box before hitting the ground. The sound this user mentioned refers to the audio that plays when these items hit the ground one by one, which many in the comments find satisfying.
Though loot boxes still function the same way in Overwatch 2, this particular animation along with its sound effect is essentially skipped as the screen fades to black with the items end up getting immediately displayed in a tab on the left side of the screen.

One user who shared the same sentiment wrote: “I got a legendary first box, but god, not seeing the full animation left me more deflated than if I just got a blue and three whites.”
Meanwhile, another user even said: “I was genuinely so disappointed when I opened one for the first time again. I used to speed up the animation and watch them all FLY down and THUNK to then get to see everything.”
“Quite literally, the most important part of opening a loot box is hope it comes back,” one chimed in.
Overall, while many players are happy with the loot boxes returning, they hoped devs would be able to add the old animation back.
