The Great League is the ideal place to start in Pokemon Go‘s competitive mode, since it’s the most basic and accessible tier of them all. So, check out which Pokemon are perfect to build a winning team!

Each new Pokemon Go season shakes up the meta in the Go Battle League, forcing players to rebuild their teams and devise new strategies to climb the ranks for a spot at the top.

However, unlike the Ultra and Master Leagues, this one gives all trainers a fairer chance at glory, as only Pokemon under 1500 CP can compete. This means that while powerful creatures can participate, you won’t have Legendaries one-shotting you.

Best team for Pokemon Go Great League

Currently, the best team that trainers can use in the Great League includes Corviknight, Carbink, and Stunfisk, as these are three of the strongest fighters, and they all offer good coverage against most of the major Great League opponents.

DEXERTO

Like most Steel-type Pokemon, one of Corviknight’s advantages is the many resistances it has. That, along with its very good Defense and Stamina stats, makes this a very difficult creature to take down.

Even though it’s the only Fast Move that doesn’t benefit from STAB, Sand Attack offers great coverage and has a very fast energy gain. As for the Charged Moves, Air Cutter is quite spammy, so it can help you take down the opponent’s shields. Plus, it benefits from STAB and has a 30% chance of boosting your Attack stat by 25%. Payback, on the other hand, is a coverage nuke all trainers using Corviknight should have as a secondary choice.

Carbink can be hard to get in the game, but adding this dual Rock/Fairy-type creature to your Great League edition team is a must in the current meta.

This Pokemon’s Fast Move by default is Rock Throw, as it deals heavy damage and benefits from STAB. When it comes to Charged Moves, go with Rock Slide for a well-rounded Rock-type attack and Moonblast for some huge (albeit expensive) Fairy-type damage. This entire moveset has STAB, which makes it extra powerful.

Stunfisk is a very bulky Pokemon thanks to its decent Defense and high Stamina stats. Plus, its unique type combination allows it to stand strong against Steel and Water-type opponents.

Thunder Shock is a fast charge move that will grant you access to your Charged Moves sooner. With Mud Bomb, you can bait the enemy shields so you’re free to hit them full-on with Discharge afterward. Both have almost the same stats, so you can switch between them depending on your opponent’s typing.

Best Pokemon for Pokemon Go Great League

Dragonair (Shadow)

• Charged Moves: Aqua Tail and Wrap
• Type: Dragon
• Resistances: Electric, Fire, Grass, and Water
• Weaknesses: Dragon, Fairy, and Ice

Although Dragonite can be eligible if its CP is low enough, the best Dragon-type Pokemon to use here is actually its pre-evolution, Dragonair, which is great news for trainers on a budget, as it’s a lot cheaper to evolve.

Dragon Breath is a brilliant Fast Move, with good STAB damage and energy generation. As for Charged Moves, go with Aqua Tail for a low-cost option to bait shields, followed up with Wrap to decrease the target’s Defense stat by 20%.

Claydol

• Fast Move: Mud Slap
• Charged Moves: Rock Tomb and Ice Beam
• Type: Ground/Psychic
• Resistances: Electric, Fighting, Poison, Psychic, and Rock
• Weaknesses: Bug, Dark, Ghost, Grass, Ice, and Water

Claydol may have more weaknesses than any other Pokemon on our list, but it still gets a chance to shine with an impressive Defense stat and a moveset that’s surprisingly well-optimized for this meta.

Mud Slap is a decent Fast Move that can dish out solid damage to Cradily, Marowak, and Empoleon. As for Charged Moves, Rock Tomb is expensive but delivers a guaranteed Attack debuff, which could be a dealbreaker in a close battle.

For the secondary Charged Move, go with Ice Beam to expand its coverage.

Dusknoir (Shadow)

• Fast Move: Astonish
• Charged Moves: Shadow Punch and Dynamic Punch
• Type: Ghost
• Resistances: Normal, Fighting, Poison, and Bug
• Weaknesses: Dark and Ghost

This Pokemon works best as the lead or charger of a team. Plus, it has the necessary Defense to stand its ground while dealing good damage.

Astonish is a very spammy move that will allow it to access its Charged Moves fast while also getting rid of the opponent’s shields. The key to Dusknoir making it into the League is mainly because of Shadow Punch, an excellent Ghost-type move, and Dynamic Punch, a Fighting-type attack that expands its coverage.

Marowak

NIANTIC

• Fast Move: Mud-Slap
• Charged Moves: Bone Club and Rock Slide
• Type: Ground
• Resistances: Electric, Rock, and Poison
• Weaknesses: Grass, Ice, and Water

The game’s meta changed with the previous season and gave a buff to Mud-Slap and Bone Club while nerfing Mud Shot. This took several Ground-type contestants out of the way and brought new faces, like Marowak.

Thanks to its high Defense, Shadow Marowak can sacrifice some of it for a higher Attack stat. Mud-Slap is the best of the two Fast Moves available, as it deals more damage than the other option – Rock Smash – and benefits from STAB.

As a spammy Pokemon, Marowak can access its Charged Moves fast, to use Bone Club for more STAB, or Rock Slide for more power, as well as coverage.

Dusclops

DEXERTO

• Charged Move: Ice Punch and Shadow Punch
• Type: Ghost
• Resistances: Bug, Fighting, Normal, and Poison
• Weaknesses: Dark and Ghost

Dusclops is arguably one of the best Ghost-type options for this League tier, as it has access to an Ice-type Charged Move and key wins over the likes of Empoleon, Corviknight, and Marowak.

Hex is the best Fast Move for energy generation (and it also gets STAB). As for Charged Moves, you’ll want the aforementioned Ice-type attack, Ice Punch, for dealing with Grass, Ground, Flying, and Dragon-type opponents.

As for your secondary Charged Move, Shadow Punch is a cheap STAB attack that’s great for spamming, too.

Clodsire

NIANTIC

• Fast Move: Poison Sting
• Charged Moves: Sludge Bomb and Earthquake
• Type: Poison/Ground
• Resistances: Poison, Electric, Rock, Fighting, Fairy, and Bug
• Weaknesses: Ground, Ice, Psychic, and Water

Clodsire appeared out of nowhere and stole a high spot of our ranking basically because – in the current meta – it is good at everything.

This dual Poison/Ground creature works fine as a lead, switch, or closer thanks to its good Defense, but mostly its massive Stamina of 209.

The blob Clodsire might exert low Fast Move pressure with Poison Sting, but it still manages to reach its incredible Charged Moves. Earthquake is one of the best moves of all time and benefits from STAB, while Sludge Bomb deals great damage, benefits from STAB, and is quite cheap. Clodsire’s access to 5 different types of moves makes it very hard to target and take down.

Empoleon

• Charged Moves: Hydro Cannon and Drill Peck
• Type: Water/Steel
• Resistances: Steel, Poison, Ice, Water, Rock, Psychic, Normal, Flying, Fairy, Dragon, and Bug
• Weaknesses: Electric, Fighting, and Ground

This dual Water/Steel-type Pokemon has climbed the ranks in the League and sits at the top thanks to its powerful Attack and formidable Defenses. It serves as a great counter to Pokemon like Cradily, Azumarill, and Tinkaton.

Metal Sound is a good, fast charge move, which makes it very spammy. As for the Charged Move, Hydro Cannon is the way to go due to its high damage and very low cost. Plus, it’s one of the best Water-type moves in the whole game. If you can afford a secondary Charged Move, Drill Peck can help you expand your coverage.

Lapras

DEXERTO

• Fast Move: Psywave
• Charged Moves: Sparkling Aria and Ice Beam
• Type: Water/Ice
• Resistances: Ice and Water
• Weaknesses: Electric, Fighting, Grass, and Rock

Besides its great bulk, Lapras has an impressive move pool, with four Fast Moves and seven Charged Moves to pick from.

Even though focusing only on Water and Ice moves to benefit from STAB would be the logical thing to do, for the Fast Move, it is best to go with Psywave. It offers the most energy generation out of all the options, and it expands Lapras’s coverage.

Skull Bash, Blizzard, and Hydro Pump are quite expensive moves, and with a few other options available, they are just not worth it. Instead, use Sparkling Aria for a solid Charged Move with STAB. It costs the same as Surf but does five more damage.

As for the secondary Charged Move, Ice Beam will offer more coverage against Grass, Dragon, and Flying opponents while also benefiting from STAB.

Forretress

DEXERTO

• Fast Move: Bug Bite
• Charged Moves: Rock Tomb and Sand Tomb
• Type: Bug/Steel
• Resistances: Poison, Grass, Steel, Psychic, Normal, Ice, Fairy, Dragon, and Bug
• Weaknesses: Fire

Forretress is one solid choice for any team as it boasts a ton of useful resistances, and it’s only weak to one type (Fire), which is not being played a lot during this season. Plus, it has a great Defense stat.

Bug-type moves are not good at all in Pokemon Go, but Bug Bite can deal heavy damage and benefits from STAB.

For the Charged Move, use Rock Tomb to decrease your opponent’s Attack stat and bait their shields. Then you can finish them up with Sand Tomb, which will also decrease the enemy’s Defense stat by 20%, making it easier to take it down.

Diggersby

NIANTIC

• Fast Move: Quick Attack
• Charged Moves: Fire Punch and Scorching Sands
• Type: Normal/Ground
• Resistances: Ghost, Electric, Rock, and Poison
• Weaknesses: Fighting, Grass, Ice, and Water

Even though Diggersby is not a great attacker, it is an extremely bulky Pokemon with a unique and useful type combination.

This season features very strong Poison types, so Diggersby is a great choice to break them. Plus, having access to Fire Punch helps this enormous rabbit fight Grass and Ice types, which are two of its weaknesses.

As if it were not enough, Scorching Sands is a wonderful Ground-type move that deals very high damage for low energy.

Cradily

• Fast Move: Acid
• Charged Moves: Grass Knot and Rock Tomb
• Type: Rock/Grass
• Resistances: Electric and Normal
• Weaknesses: Bug, Fighting, Ice, and Steel

The surprise star of this cup is Cradily, which has never really had any viability in the Pokemon Go Battle League before but is currently ranking high. This is most likely thanks to a very strong moveset and bulkiness.

While Bullet Seed and Infestation have fast energy generation, Acid is pretty decent and can help Cradily mainly against Grass-type opponents. Meanwhile, Rock Tomb is effective against Fire types and decreases the target’s Attack stat by 20%, and Grass Knot can take care of Water enemies. Plus, both benefit from STAB.

Galarian Corsola

NIANTIC/DEXERTO

• Fast Move: Astonish
• Charged Moves: Night Shade and Power Gem
• Type: Ghost
• Resistances: Normal, Fighting, Poison, and Bug
• Weaknesses: Dark and Ghost

Since its debut, Galarian Corsola has climbed the PvP ranks on the Great League thanks to its bulkiness and strong moveset, which benefits from STAB.

Tackle is a really bad option, so pick Astonish for your Fast Move, as it is the only Ghost-type attack and has great synergy with Night Shade.

Night Shade is a very cheap Charged Move with decent damage per energy, so go with it. Complement it with Power Gem, as it will expand your coverage, thanks to its affordability.
