It’s finally time to say goodbye to Bobby (sorry, he definitely isn’t magically resurrecting) after his traumatic death. 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 16 is all about his funeral, and the first look is already emotional.
The binge-worthy TV show has now been off the air for two weeks, which is just as well after the two-episode Contagion arc. After a purposefully started fire led to a deadly virus outbreak at a science lab, Bobby tragically died after making sure all of his team were already safe.
Chimey was originally the red herring death after the first part, but now he’s got to live with the knowledge that Bobby gave us his own life so Chimey could carry on living his.
In fact, all of the 118 now has to grapple with the loss, with Bobby’s funeral fast approaching in 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 16, airing May 1, 2025. You’ll need tissues, that’s for sure.
New 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 16 photos show Bobby’s emotional funeral
In new photos released by TV Line on April 30, 2025, the full picture of Bobby’s funeral is starting to emerge. The whole station is in attendance, with Chimey and Buck doing the honors of carrying his coffin out of the church. You can also see the coffin itself is fire station red, with the 118 logo front and center.
Athena is also going to have her separate journey of grief, something we’ve already seen hinted at in the episode’s teaser trailer.
Additional photos also show other members of the station, such as Hen, Ravi, and Maddie getting ready for the funeral, each dealing with their own personal issues on top of their collectively shared grief.
Thanks to the below trailer, we can start to prepare for what those dynamics are. Following on from the lab disaster, we see Chimey blame Bobby for his own death instead of himself, telling Buck, “He gave his life so I could live… I’m just not sure what I’m supposed to do with that.”

Understandably, Athena is also struggling to cope in the wake of Bobby’s death. While she’s seen stoically walking down the street as part of the funeral procession, she later tells her loved ones, “He’s not supposed to be dead… he’s just left me.”
If you’re still annoyed that Bobby had to die in the Contagion arc, it was for a reason. As showrunner Tim Minnear confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter, “Once I started thinking that somebody had to die, then the choice was, who? And the only choice that I thought made sense was Bobby. It makes sense for his character to have a tragic sacrifice as a conclusion of his entire journey in the show.
“And also, if there’s a character whose death is going to affect the most characters, who would that be? So, go big or go home.”
