A Minecraft Movie is already a box office juggernaut, and there’s a chance it could make enough money join the billion-dollar club.
Times have changed. Video game movies were once destined to be flops; even 2002’s widely liked Resident Evil wasn’t a massive hit, grossing just over $100 million worldwide.
Hollywood seems to have figured them out. The Super Mario Bros Movie is one of the highest-grossing movies of all time, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 became the most successful film in the franchise, and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is one of the most anticipated horror movies of 2025.
A Minecraft Movie may not be a critical hit (it’s currently sitting at 51% on Rotten Tomatoes, lower than 2021’s Mortal Kombat), but it’s going to make a lot of money.
How much has A Minecraft Movie made at the box office?

A Minecraft Movie has made $552 million worldwide since its theatrical release on April 4, 2025.
That’s a huge figure. It made over $10 million in the US alone from its Thursday preview screenings, and it exceeded everyone’s expectations with a $301 million global opening.
It’s still going strong after two weeks in cinemas, thanks to the “chicken jockey” trend going viral and a lack of other options for families… until the Lilo and Stitch remake hits theaters on May 23. In other words, it could dominate cinemas for another month.
Remember, A Minecraft Movie is based on the best-selling game of all time; to put that into context, GTA V is estimated to have sold over 200 million copies, while Minecraft has sold more than 300 million. If Five Nights at Freddy’s (a smaller game with a loyal fanbase) managed to make nearly $300m, imagine how much A Minecraft Movie could rake in if its bookings don’t slow down.
A $1 billion box office hail is very much in play – however, The Super Mario Bros Movie grossed $1.36 billion worldwide by the end of its run, so it still has a long way to go ($808 million, to be more exact).

How much does A Minecraft Movie need to break even?

A Minecraft Movie reportedly had a $150 million production budget, which doesn’t include its advertising costs. So, it needed to make at least $375 million to break even (if not even more, depending on how much was spent on marketing).
That may seem a little confusing, but it’s generally believed that a movie needs to make 2.5x its budget to break even (consider all of the costs; fees to exhibitors, merchandising, taxes, and much more).
