With A Minecraft Movie currently breaking box office records, director Jared Hess has addressed one of the film’s post-credits scenes, and what that means for a potential sequel.

A Minecraft Movie is making headlines for multiple reasons at the moment, with streamers being controversially cut from the film, and audiences getting kicked out of screenings for being too rowdy.

But the film has been a box office sensation, with A Minecraft Movie shattering records, and well on its way to grossing $1 billion worldwide.

So in spite of largely negative reviews – and a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 48% – talk has already turned to a potential sequel, as well as a major character that might appear. Meaning SPOILERS ahead…

Jared Hess says A Minecraft Movie 2 “would be so much fun”

Following those huge opening numbers, Deadline asked director Jared Hess about A Minecraft Movie sequel, to which he responded positively, saying: “It would be so much fun. We had so much fun making this movie, and it’s such an expansive world in the game, and there were so many things that we didn’t tap into that we wanted to.

“I would have a blast doing the sequel, and it seems like there’s already talk about it happening, so I’m super excited.

“It’ll be so much fun to go back into the world. The fans are just having such a good time. We  teased it in the end credits, and the fans seem to be going wild for it.”

“Alex” will take center stage in sequel

A Minecraft Movie features two post-credits scenes, the first of which revolves around Marlene (Jennifer Coolidge) and another that teases the arrival of Alex, the second default character introduced in the game.

Here’s how we described the sequence in our Minecraft Movie ending explainer: “In the scene, Steve has now returned from Minecraft’s Overworld, and goes back to the house he abandoned (this had apparently been sold in the meantime).

“He knocks on the door and finds the new homeowner, a woman with red hair and a green shirt. She welcomes him, but we never see her face. Steve introduces himself and she asks whether he’s coming back because of the old chest he left in the attic. She then introduces herself as Alex.”

When asked about that introduction, Hess says Alex will play a major role in Part 2, saying: “The character we teased is Alex, the other massively critical character in Minecraft. It’s Steve (Jack Black) and Alex, and so that’s the one that we will be bringing to the table without a doubt.”
