This is the Overworld come to life, for God’s sake – of course we’re going to be drowning in Minecraft movie Easter eggs! However, the one you’ll most likely miss is the one you need to see the most.
What happens when you put a pre-existing plot into an open-world game? A new movie adaptation of an epic franchise, that’s what. A Minecraft Movie is now on the big screen, and Jack Black’s got an armful of brand-new songs to go with it.
Black plays Steve, a regular guy trapped in the Overworld by Malgosha, an evil Piglin keeping him hostage in the Nether. When the orb Steve used to get there ends up back in the real world, it’s up to a ragtag team of misfits to set him free.
Fans get a full tour of the movie Overworld in the process, and there’s Minecraft Easter eggs aplenty. One is hidden so well that you’ll definitely miss it… but there’s a good reason you should keep your eyes peeled.
Minecraft’s iconic paintings were upscaled for the movie
Remember those paintings you’ve decorated with for years playing Minecraft? Well, A Minecraft Movie consulted the original artist, Kristoffer Zetterstrand, to upscale them for the film’s Overworld.

Speaking to Dexerto, producer Torfi Ólafsson explained, “I loved making the upscale versions of the paintings. We got permission from Kristoffer, the original artist who made the Minecraft paintings, and see them hanging on the walls, and dressing Steve’s stash, and then putting all the stuff into the shelves.”

“There was also stuff that we actually had to take out which would have ruined the plot of the movie,” he said of his favorite details. “Getting the angry old man in there was very important, and the woodland mansion. But also things like the iron golems turned out so well.”
When it comes to Easter eggs in general, fans should watch the movie without expectations. While you can spend hours and hours playing the game, the movie has less than two hours to spare covering the entire setting, so not everything is going to be included.
“The question was where we go, which dimensions we go into, and how deep. If we had wanted to cover everything within Minecraft, it would have just been like a slideshow going past,” Ólafsson added. “It wouldn’t have time to breathe or tell a story. We had to take some artistic choices about which characters and which mobs to feature. I’m pretty happy with the choices.”
If you’re clued into movie news, you’ll know a select few YouTuber cameos are the most obvious Easter eggs of the bunch. But who are they playing? That’s a question I’ll leave you to figure out.
