Let’s be honest… did A Simple Favor actually need a sequel? If anything, Another Simple Favor’s shock ending proves it needed to happen all along. Warning: spoilers ahead!
Thanks to Stephanie’s (Anna Kendrick) secret livestream, A Simple Favor ended with Emily (Blake Lively) being shipped off to jail. It was revealed her real name was Hope McLanden, responsible for killing both her abusive dad as a child and later her twin sister Faith as an adult.
A criminal behind bars… just how any good thriller movie should end, right? Wrong! Seven years later and the story picks up again, reuniting our main pair in Capri after Emily is released from jail while appealing her original conviction.
The new movie follows her wedding in Capri to Mafia hunk Dante (Michele Morrone) and why on Earth Stephanie has been invited in the first place. As we quickly learn, the Another Simple Favor ending is one fans will never see coming.
Emily’s triplet Charity is revealed to be alive in Another Simple Favor’s ending
In short, Hope and Faith’s triplet Charity – who we’re originally told died at birth in the first movie – was in fact secretly raised by their Aunt Linda (Allison Janney). At the wedding, Linda tries to get Charity to steal Emily’s identity, giving her direct access to the Mafia’s finances.
When the guests get to Capri and there’s still an air of mystery about what’s actually happening, Emily and Dante manage to get hitched without any issues. During the dinner reception, Dante’s mom Portia (Elena Sofia Ricci), who absolutely hates that Dante is marrying an American, ‘surprises’ Emily with her mom and aunt. The trio has an awkward reunion, with Linda making it clear she’s there to look after Margaret.

Later that evening, Dante is shot by an unknown figure, leaving Stephanie in the frame. By this point, she’s already found Sean (Henry Golding) dead in his bathroom after getting drunk at the earlier dinner. Nobody’s seen who killed either, with Stephanie coming the closest. The police keep her hostage in her room but don’t officially charge her… at least, not until Emily arrives.
Emily asks to speak with Stephanie privately, completely changing in personality from when they saw each other earlier in the day. Their usual no-holds-barred banter is nowhere to be seen, with Emily seemingly in a strange state of mourning. As Stephanie accuses this of being another of Emily’s deranged plans, Emily slices her own neck, causing Stephanie to be arrested.

Thanks to a lovely yet helpless FBI agent tailing Stephanie in Capri, the feds are trying their best to help Stephanie out. A cleaning lady helps her escape to meet the agent in the town square, only for Emily to appear and kill her. Two men take Stephanie away, revealing Portia is holding her in a basement.
Using truth serum, Portia learns Stephanie really didn’t kill Dante, but still leaves her for dead when her true crime theories become annoying. Emily comes to her rescue, with Stephanie in total confusion. It’s here we learn the truth about the sisters, alongside Aunt Linda’s real reason for being there.
Aunt Linda’s secret makes way for the most unhinged scene yet
Turns out, Linda saw Emily shortly before going out to Capri – or at least, that’s how it looked to Stephanie. CCTV footage shows Linda meeting Charity, who is still alive. We flashback to the triplets’ birth, with Linda helping Margaret (Elizabeth Perkins) deliver the babies. Linda steals Charity for herself, telling Margaret she died during the birth. From then, Charity becomes an accessory to Linda’s criminal life.

Emily doesn’t know any of this until the day of the wedding, though. Charity turns up in her room, explaining how much she always knew she’d be able to save her sisters one day. The two have sex (yes, really) before Emily is disposed of on her own wedding day. It was Charity who killed both Sean and Dante, with Linda threatening Emily in the meantime. With the help of Margaret, who told Stephanie she’d seen Charity in a dazed frenzy, Stephanie finally understands the truth.
But after Stephanie and Emily reunite, things don’t get resolved quite so quickly. Charity takes Emily’s son Nicky hostage, threatening to kill him while hijacking one of Stephanie’s livestreams. They find Nicky, Charity, and Linda on a balcony where Emily jokingly threatened to kill Stephanie earlier on, with Linda holding a gun to Nicky’s head.
Linda explains her retirement fund reasoning, trying to get Charity to kill Stephanie. Once Nicky is rescued from their clutches, Emily tries to convince Charity to let Stephnie go too. Things take a turn when Linda tells Charity that Emily must be killed in order for the plan to be fulfilled. Wanting nothing more than to be properly reunited with her sister, Charity refuses, shoving Linda down the cliff instead.
Now the remaining four are still alive, Emily manages to get Charity to agree to a plan for the greater good of their love. On the news, Emily is seen to be ‘rearrested’ by the cops, only it’s Charity who has taken her place. Stephanie returns home tasked with the added responsibility of raising Nicky in the hopes of giving him a stable life.
A Simple Favor 3 is teased by Portia
But where does this leave Emily? Well, she’s hiding out in Rome, where Portia meets her.

Sitting on the edge of the Trevi fountain, Portia says she sympathizes with what Emily has been through, acknowledging that she wasn’t responsible for killing son Dante (Michele Morrone). However, there’s a catch. Portia says she considers Emily family now, and family has to help each other in their time of need.
Portia hands Emily an envelope, claiming she needs “another simple favor.” It’s implied the favor is a hit job to take someone down, but we never see what’s inside the envelope – or even see Emily open it at all.
