New Avatar: Fire & Ash trailer reveals huge Spider twist that changes everything

Ash in Avatar 3

The new trailer for Avatar: Fire & Ash reveals a terrifying thought for the Na’vi population: what if humans could live on Pandora without the need for a mask?

When Jake Sully arrives on Pandora in the first Avatar movie, every human needs to wear a mask as soon as they step outside. That’s because the moon’s atmosphere has a high concentration of carbon dioxide, making its air poisonous and effectively unbreathable.

This came into play in its climactic battle with Quaritch, with Jake’s body falling out of his pod and falling victim to the atmosphere, forcing Neytiri to transfer his soul and consciousness to his avatar permanently.

However, could it be possible for a human to breathe in Pandora’s air without a filter? Going by the new trailer for Avatar 3, the answer is yes.

At 1:20 in the new trailer, neon-blue tendrils can be seen moving into Spider’s mouth and nose. Afterwards, he’s standing up without a mask on, and Varang (the film’s villain, the leader of the Ash People) asks him, “How do you still live?”

Jake can then be seen asking a human scientist, “What if every human being could live here without a mask?”

At first, you might think this is a good thing. However, Pandora’s atmosphere is one of the biggest barriers preventing (and protecting) it from colonization. As he warns in another scene, “the Na’vi people will be gone.”

If there’s a way for humans to breathe on Pandora, it could put every life on the moon at risk. Also, it’s worth remembering what the late Jon Landau said about Avatar 4: it’ll (at least partly) take place on Earth.

“There’s over-population and a depletion of our natural resources that make life harder. But we don’t want to paint a bleak picture for where our world is going. The films are also about the idea that we can change course,” he told Empire Magazine.

“There are good humans, and there are bad humans — the same thing on the Na’avi side — but oftentimes, people don’t see themselves as bad. What is the root cause of how they evolve into what we perceive as bad? Maybe there are other factors there that we’re not aware of.”

Consider this: if humans are already hunting whales on Pandora for Amrita, a fluid said to stop aging entirely, they could colonize Pandora and drain its resources until it’s as barren as Earth.
