Ben Affleck reveals his biggest problem with the SnyderVerse and playing Batman

Ben Affleck as Batman in Justice League

It’s been a while now since Ben Affleck hung up his cowl (with Robert Pattinson now taking up the superhero handle), and the star has since reflected on his biggest gripe with the DC franchise.

There were some good moments to come from Affleck’s tenure as the Caped Crusader (not the least of which being his viral “Sad Affleck” interview to promote Batman v Superman).

But time has moved on, and now that the SnyderVerse is over and done with, the ex-superhero star has been reflecting on the new era of Batman movies.

And when it comes to where the DC movies failed, he thinks there’s one clear answer.

Ben Affleck says Batman movies skewed “too old”

Speaking to GQ, Affleck praised his time in the franchise, and admitted to loving the role, including his brief cameo appearances in other DC projects.

“I had a really good time. I loved doing the Batman movie,” he said. “I loved Batman v Superman. And I liked my brief stints on The Flash that I did and when I got to work with Viola Davis on Suicide Squad for a day or two.

“In terms of creatively, I really think that I like the idea and the ambition that I had for it, which was of the sort of older, broken, damaged Bruce Wayne. And it was something we really went for in the first movie.”

However, there’s a reason he thinks the Batman-starring movies failed to take off during his era, and it all has to do with the mature nature of the SnyderVerse movies. In other words, it all got a little bit too grown up.

“What happened was it started to skew too old for a big part of the audience,” he explained. “Like even my own son at the time was too scared to watch the movie. And so when I saw that I was like, ‘Oh sh*t, we have a problem.’

“Then I think that’s when you had a filmmaker that wanted to continue down that road and a studio that wanted to recapture all the younger audience at cross purposes. Then you have two entities, two people really wanting to do something different and that is a really bad recipe.”
