Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker reveals new Netflix show with bonkers announcement

Charlie Brooker attends Black Mirror x TCKR Systems Event at TCKR Systems HQ, The Brunswick Centre, London, UK — on April 8th, 2025 in London, England.

Looking to fill that Black Mirror-shaped hole in your life? We have good news: Charlie Brooker is working on a new detective show for Netflix involving a twisted serial killer, and he’s announced the news in the most Charlie Brooker way possible.

If you didn’t grow up in the UK, chances are you didn’t get to enjoy Brooker pre-Black Mirror. From his social commentary comedies like Screenwipe, Gameswipe, and Newswipe to his collaborations with Chris Morris (another British icon), he’s a true king of satire.

Black Mirror is the perfect proof of this sentiment. In Season 6, for example, he took jabs at the show’s very own streaming home, and in the latest Season 7, he played tricks on his viewers

Even though Brooker’s next project is an entirely different genre, he couldn’t help but poke fun at the announcement itself.

Charlie Brooker promises “blood and frowning” in new Netflix show

Netflix announced that production is currently taking place for Brooker’s new show, a four-part crime thriller series in which a tormented detective must hunt down a “ritualistic serial killer” before it’s too late.

In classic Brooker fashion, he gave the following statement: “I’m beyond thrilled to be saying these words for the press release.

“I’ve dreamt of providing a quote ever since I was a young foetus, and now here I am doing it. I’d pinch myself, but like all of us, I’m terrified that if I do that, I might wake up and discover 2025 has all been a magical dream. Please watch my show. I am begging you.”

Although it’s currently untitled, What’s On Netflix found out that its placeholder name for now is Project Codename. Filming is underway in Manchester, UK, with Brooker promising that there will be lots of “blood and frowning.”

What’s more, he’s brought together a killer cast, including House of the Dragon star Paddy Considine, Barbarian’s Georgina Campbell (who also appeared in Black Mirror’s ‘Hang the DJ’), and Game of Thrones icon Lena Headey.

As per Netflix, “The untitled series is set between the fictional northern city of Bleakford and the streets of London, following a tormented detective on a relentless mission to catch a ritualistic serial killer before they run out of victims.

“The show’s described as a ‘profoundly serious’ crime thriller, which is the first clue that he’s up to something wickedly funny.”

There’s no release date at the time of writing, but we can expect more details to emerge as production progresses.
